Source: Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne visiting Arizona State
Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne spent the weekend visiting Arizona State, a source close to the quarterback told On3. He spent most of Saturday in Tempe before wrapping up his visit Sunday.
Marcus Freeman informed the former four-star recruit earlier this month he could compete for the job this spring, but the program planned to at least take one quarterback from the portal this offseason.
“We had to be honest, I love Drew Pyne but part of that love is to tell him that we’re looking at the transfer portal and possibly taking a quarterback,” Freeman said. “I could have not told him, could have lied and waited until after the game. … That’s not what we’re built on. We’re built on really authentic relationships and having those honest conversations.”
Pyne replaced Tyler Buchner in September following a season-ending injury. He started in 10 games this season for Notre Dame, boasting a 64.6% completion rate with 24 total touchdowns and six interceptions.
He’s thrown for 2,257 yards with a 63.1% completion percentage in 15 career games. If he landed at Arizona State, he would join forces with new Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham. The former Oregon offensive coordinator played a major role in Bo Nix‘s resurgence this past fall.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
With three years of eligibility remaining, Pyne would have time to learn and develop in Dillingham’s pro-style, fast-paced offense. Arizona State recently lost Emory Jones and Paul Tyson to the portal.
The Sun Devils already added former BYU quarterback Jacob Conover. The former four-star recruit only played in five games in two seasons with the Cougars.
A member of the 2020 recruiting class, Pyne held offers from Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn coming out of high school.
He’s currently ranked the No. 16 quarterback in On3’s Transfer Portal rankings.
