Five impactful transfer portal commitments from the weekend
Payton Thorne’s commitment to Auburn was the beginning of a busy last few days of transfer portal commitments.
Since Thorne’s announcement Friday afternoon, around 10 other Power Five schools have landed at least one new transfer addition. Here are five of the more impactful pickups from the weekend aside from Thorne (listed alphabetically):
Wide receiver Caleb Burton, Auburn
A day after landing Thorne, Auburn gave him a new weapon at wide receiver. Although Burton wasn’t a factor within a loaded receiver room at Ohio State (and didn’t post any stats as a freshman last season), the Buckeyes transfer ranked as a top-160 overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting class according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Auburn beat out schools such as Arizona State, which hosted Burton on a visit just days before his commitment to the Tigers.
Defensive back Tre’Quon Fegans, USC
USC not only secured a commitment from Fegans, it also received a commitment from his younger brother, Class of 2025 top safety recruit Anquon Fegans. In Tre’Quon, USC adds an Alabama transfer and a Class of 2022 top-150 overall recruit who was also being courted by other programs such as Penn State and Arizona. Penn State had been working to get him in for a visit and he’d told On3 early last week that he planned on visiting the Nittany Lions this week, but he instead decided to commit to USC during a weekend visit with the Trojans. Although he ranked as one of the top 20 cornerback prospects in the 2022 recruiting class, USC’s current plan is to use him at safety and potentially as a nickel back.

Tight end Var’Keyes Gumms, Arkansas
Gumms had already committed to Arkansas once. The North Texas transfer then did it for a second time this weekend. It came after Gumms briefly decommitted last week and then took a visit to California. Within a day of the visit, Gumms was back locked in with Arkansas. That’s good news for the Razorbacks. Multiple college personnel staffers have told On3 that they consider Gumms to be one of the top pass-catching tight ends to go into the transfer portal in the last year. Gumms, who also had offers from teams like Oregon, posted 34 catches for 458 yards and five touchdowns at North Texas last season.
Offensive guard Cam’Ron Johnson, Missouri
While he hasn’t gotten the attention of other offensive line transfers like Emmanuel Pregnon, Johnson was one of the top free agent offensive linemen this spring. A first-team All-AAC selection last season, the Houston transfer took visits to places such as USC, Colorado and Arizona State but ultimately decided to reunite with his former offensive line coach at Houston, Brandon Jones, who’s now the offensive line coach at Missouri. Johnson was one of two solid portal pickups for the Tigers during the weekend. Missouri also added former Tennessee and Jackson State EDGE Nyles Gaddy, who ranked second on Deion Sanders’ 2022 Jackson State squad with seven sacks.
Wide receiver Mycah Pittman, Utah
Cam Rising lost his top weapon from last year, 2022 first-team All-Pac 12 tight end and Buffalo Bills first-round pick Dalton Kincaid, but Utah has now at least given him another playmaker at wide receiver with the addition of Pittman. It’s a return to the Pac-12 for Pittman, who played three seasons at Oregon before spending last year at Florida State. He ranked second on FSU with 32 catches last season.
