Clemson has one of the top quarterback rooms in the country, with DJ Uiagalelei being the presumed starter and former On3 Consensus five-star prospect Cade Klubnik coming into the program. With that, Taisun Phommachanh decided to enter the transfer portal and further his college football career elsewhere.

On Monday, Phommachanh announced he would be transferring to Georgia Tech to play for head coach Geoff Collins. There’s a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Atlanta, meaning Phommachanh will have a fresh opportunity to impress and possibly start for the ACC program.

Phommachanh made appearances during all three of his years at Clemson but all were in the latter stages of games. He completed 11 of his 29 career throws, adding one passing touchdown. Being the dual-threat quarterback he is, Phommachanh also added 19 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Coming out of high school, Phommachanh was a four-star prospect according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. He ranked as a top 10 quarterback in the country at No. 9 and was the No. 2 player from his home state of Connecticut.

If Phommachanh is able to win the starting job with Georgia Tech, he would open the season against his former school. The Yellow Jackets are set to play against Clemson on Monday, Sept. 5 on the road in Death Valley.

Clemson QB room still in good shape after Taisun Phommachanh departure

Even though Phommachanh has left the Clemson program, the Clemson quarterback room is still in good shape. Between Uiagalelia returning for another year and Klubnik coming via the 2022 recruiting class, head coach Dabo Swinney has set them up for success for this year and beyond.

Recently, ACC Network analyst and former Clemson player Eric Mac Lain discussed how Klubnik joining the program was good for Uiagalelia. He said the true freshman has “really pushed” the anticipated starter as he looks to improve heading into the season.

“The biggest question until proven otherwise is going to be quarterback play and just what can he do,” said Mac Lain. “I honestly think that the best thing that has happened to Clemson in this offseason is the fact that Cade Klubnik, one of the best players in the country last year from high school, enrolled early and has really pushed DJ. I think competition makes everyone better, and it’s going to be one of those things, if it’s another situation that at four games we see a change, or did that pressure, did that competitiveness push DJ to be the best version of himself.”
