Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets offensive lineman Jakiah Leftwich has committed to transfer to the North Carolina Tar Heels. He announced the decision on Twitter/X.

Jakiah Leftwich spent three seasons with Georgia Tech. In his first year, the 2021 season, he took a redshirt before playing in 10 games in 2021 and seven appearances with four starts in 2023. He brings two seasons of eligibility to the Tar Heels.

“THIS IS HOME! COMMITTED! #GoHeels,” Leftwich wrote.

Jakiah Leftwich played high school football at Westlake (GA), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 793 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

North Carolina and the Transfer Portal

In general, North Carolina and head coach Mack Brown are not among the most active teams in the Transfer Portal. As of now, the Tar Heels are just 61st in the On3 2024 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. That includes a 2024 class that has seen 16 players leave the program with only five transferring in to this point.

This comes a season after Tez Walker transferred into the program but struggled to secure eligibility amid a battle with the NCAA.

The 2024 transfers into North Carolina, including Jakiah Leftwich, are Jakeen Harris, Jake Johnson, Austin Blaske, and Max Johnson. All but Harris are offensive players with the Tar Heels adding a quarterback and multiple offensive linemen. All five players are also Power Five transfers as Brown and the Tar Heels look to add to the roster.

However, the Tar Heels have lost some key players to the Transfer Portal this cycle as well. That includes eight players who have already landed at Power Five schools. It also includes three key offensive linemen who North Carolina will need to replace.

On the other side, Georgia Tech is 62nd in the On3 2024 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. That includes 21 players who have left the program and nine who are coming into the program. Jakiah Leftwich is one of the bigger losses the team has had. He’s also one of five offensive linemen to leave Georgia Tech, with only one new offensive lineman transferring in to replace them.
