John Michael Wright is an electric 6-foot-0, 185-pound point guard originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina. It has been two days since he entered his name into the transfer portal, with the potential for two years to play.

Wright, a junior, played all three seasons at High Point University. He averaged 18.4 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.0 steals per game in 34.9 minutes per game last season. In only three seasons, Wright is fourth on High Point’s all-time points scored (1,498) list. Wright is eighth in their all-time minutes played (2,892) list.

In the 48 hours since entering the portal, the sophomore has had over 20 college programs reach out. On3 caught up with John Michael Wright to talk about who all has reached out and what he will be looking for in a program.

“So far, I have heard from Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, Clemson, South Carolina, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Florida, Purdue, Mississippi State, LSU, BYU, South Florida, Davidson, Seton Hall, SMU, and some more,” Wright told On3.

Coming out of Fayetteville (NC) Academy, Wright chose High Point over offers from Hampton, Arkansas State, Marshall, and Maryland-Baltimore County. He has twice been named 1st Team All-Big South and was the 2019-20 Big South Freshman of the Year.

Last season Wright led the Big South in scoring and total points produced (566). He also finished top ten in the conference in assists per game (3.4), steals per game (1.6), and field goal percentage (41.0-percent).

Wright’s take

“I’ll be looking for a place to play right away,” Wright said. “A program I will have a big impact while playing at the highest level and just getting better every day.”
