Former Iowa State tight end DeShawn Hanika has made a decision on his new school after transferring away from the Cyclones. According to a Monday morning post from his Twitter account, Hanika will remain in the Big 12 and has committed to Kansas for the 2024 season.

Hanika’s journey as a college football player has been long, winding, bumpy at times, and somehow, is still going. He was originally a member of the 2018 high school class at Hayden High in Topeka but went unranked as a prospect and wound up at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, which wasn’t made of gold but did feature a nice lake.

He actually never played a snap at Butler but still transferred up to Iowa State and spent the last four years in Ames, contributing as a special teamer the first two before breaking out as a tight end in year three. In 2022, Hanika caught 17 passes 244 yards and four touchdowns.

High hopes for his senior year were dashed by a sports gambling and tampering with records charges hit Hanika along with several other Iowa State football players. Hanika was accused of betting on over 200 Iowa State basketball games — a big No-No for college athletes, especially at their same school — while other players had apparently bet on Iowa State’s football team, which they played for of course.

Several players are still dealing with the fallout and Hanika’s 2023 season was toast because of the ordeal, although he did have his case dismissed because the court took too long to indict him. So, he’s legally in the clear and free to play one more year of college ball back in his home state with the Jayhawks.
