Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord commits to Syracuse
Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord has committed to Syracuse, a source has confirmed to On3. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to report the news on Sunday afternoon.
A native of Mt. Laurel, N.J., McCord will be returning to the East Coast to finish out his college career. With one year of eligibility remaining, he’ll be able to immediately play for the Orange.
It’s a huge pickup for Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, too. The former Georgia assistant now has his starting quarterback. McCord had received interest from Mississippi State and Nebraska, but after talks broke with the Huskers he turned his attention to Syracuse. He spent this past weekend on an official visit with the ACC school.
When the quarterback entered college football’s free agency in the early hours on Monday, Dec. 4, it stunned most of the sport. Leading one of the most highly-respected programs in the nation, not many expected McCord to leave after his first season, nevertheless finish his college career elsewhere.
That’s the position he now finds himself in. A five-star recruit coming out of St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, he sat behind CJ Stroud for two years before challenging for the starting job. McCord went head-to-head with Devin Brown in this summer’s quarterback battle, ultimately winning out and starting the season opener against Indiana.
The quarterback looked more and more comfortable as the season progressed, throwing for 736 yards and eight touchdowns in a three-game stretch leading up to The Game. He also dealt with a leg injury in November.
Ohio State’s offense moved the ball against Michigan, as Kyle McCord finished 18 of 30 for 271 yards and two scores. He also threw two interceptions; the second one coming in the final minute of the game as he was sacked.
