Report: Texas transfer QB Maalik Murphy set to visit Duke, Baylor, Oregon State
One of the top quarterback prospects in the transfer portal, Maalik Murphy has plenty of suitors lining up after deciding to leave Texas. He now has three visits set after officially hitting the portal on Thursday, according to a report from Greg Biggins.
Murphy is visiting Duke on Friday before traveling to Baylor on Dec. 16 and Oregon State on Dec. 17. He served as Texas’ primary backup quarterback behind Quinn Ewers the last two seasons, but is now set to take his talents elsewhere.
After entering the portal, Murphy came in as the No. 36 overall transfer and the No. 11-ranked quarterback to hit the open market, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.
Maalik Murphy made seven appearances in 2023, including two starts after Ewers suffered an injury. In that time, he completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. After entering the portal, Murphy released a heartfelt statement on his decision and won’t be with Texas for the College Football Playoff.
Murphy told ESPN’s Pete Thamel the timing didn’t allow him to be with the team for the Sugar Bowl against Washington, but he’s now gearing up for his next steps.
“It’s nothing against Texas at all,” Murphy told Thamel. “I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team.”
