Malachi Nelson, one of the top quarterbacks and overall players in the transfer portal, is headed to Idaho after committing to Boise State today. He announced the decision via social media.

Nelson just finished his freshman season at USC this fall. After not seeing any action besides in the opener as a backup for the Trojans, though, he elected to move on from Los Angeles through the portal.

As a former top prospect, several programs got involved early on in his recruitment as a transfer. However, around the start of the new year, the Broncos gained a lot of momentum, especially after earning a visit from Nelson. That has all paid off with his commitment to Boise State to continue the early success of the program under Spencer Danielson.

In his lone appearance this year, Nelson went 1-3 against San José State.

Nelson played high school football at Los Alamitos (CA) where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 11 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He finished as the No. 5 QB in the class and the No. 2 player out of the state behind only Nico Iamaleava at Tennessee.

In On3’s Portal Rankings, Nelson was the No. 6 QB and the No. 16 available transfer overall this offseason.

This is a significant get for Boise State considering the caliber of player that Nelson is and can be. The question now is how he develops at the position over the time at his next stop with the Broncos.
