Marshall defensive back Kerion Martin has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Martin has spent the past three seasons with the Thundering Herd, but now will look to take his talents elsewhere to a new program ahead of the 2024 season.

In 2020 Martin made four game appearances for Marshall as a true freshman where he recorded three tackles. In the past two seasons his role increased for the Thundering Herd, appearing in 12 games in each year where he racked up 76 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

Martin played high school football at Capital High school in Charleston (WV), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 2,161 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Notably, Marshall’s starting quarterback Cam Fancher entered the transfer portal this offseason and is committed to play at Florida Atlantic, with backup quarterback Chase Harrison also heading for greener pastures in his commitment to Ball State.

Marshall’s top wide receiver Jayden Harrison has also parted ways with the program, committing to play at Notre Dame earlier this month. But the Thundering Herd’s biggest loss may be on the defensive side of the ball, with defensive lineman Elijah Alston entering the transfer portal and committing to play at Miami following a breakout 2023 season highlighted by his 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks.

The Thundering Herd may have taken some losses in the transfer portal this offseason following their disappointing 6-7 finish last year, but they’ve also taken some steps in the right direction with some exciting commitments as well.

15 players have committed to Marshall from the transfer portal so far, with eight of them coming from the Power Five level. Bralon Brown and Cedrick Nicely both committed to Marshall this offseason after three seasons Ole Miss, with former Wake Forest quarterback Mitch Griffis and North Carolina wideout Tychaun Chapman also headlining a group of promising commitments.
