One of Nebraska’s starting defensive backs from last year is no longer with the program.

Cornhuskers safety Myles Farmer has entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer, On3 has learned.

New Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule had shared Monday that Farmer was suspended indefinitely from the team during the summer. The suspension was for “simple things, nothing major, just sort of some of our standards,” Rhule said. At the time, Rhule didn’t rule out a return to the program for Farmer, but he wasn’t on the team’s initial 120-man fall camp roster.

“I don’t know. It’s just kind of day-by-day,” Rhule said of Farmer’s status Monday. “I love Myles. He’s a competitive kid. It’s so hard when you have a new coach and they have different standards than you’re used to, so I get that. We’ve been patient with a lot of guys. We’ll see what happens with Myles. The ball’s in his court. We’d love him to be here, but whatever he wants to do, I respect him as a man. So whatever he decides, I understand.”

Farmer, a former three-star recruit, was part of Nebraska’s 2019 recruiting class. He made 16 career starts for the Cornhuskers with career totals of 110 tackles and four interceptions.

His 73 tackles last season ranked as the second-most on the team. He also posted an interception and four pass breakups. The interception, which came in the fourth quarter of a 14-13 win over Rutgers, helped put the Cornhuskers in position for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown.

Before becoming a full-time starter last year, Farmer made four starts in 2021 and finished the year with 30 tackles and an interception. He tallied six tackles and two interceptions in five games in 2020 before suffering a season-ending injury.

Farmer made one tackle while playing as a backup during the Cornhuskers’ spring game in April.

The Atlanta native ranked as the 64th-best safety and 642nd-best overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting class according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

In addition to losing Farmer, Nebraska is also currently without another 2022 starter at safety, Marques Buford. Buford, who recorded 59 tackles and two interceptions last year, is still working back from a knee surgery he suffered last November against Wisconsin.

The Cornhuskers finished last season ranked 10th in the Big Ten in total defense and 12th in pass defense.

This year’s Nebraska team opens the season against Minnesota August 31 and then travels to face Deion Sanders and Colorado Sept. 9.
