Oakland forward Trey Townsend plans to enter transfer portal
Oakland player and the team’s leading scorer from its Round of 32 squad this season, Trey Townsend, plans to enter the transfer portal, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.
Here was Tipton’s report of that story Wednesday morning, which he tweeted out:
“Oakland forward Trey Townsend plans to enter the transfer portal, a source tells @On3sports. The 6-6 junior averaged 17.3 PTS, 8.1 REB, and 3.1 AST this season.”
Townsend was a two-time All-Horizon League selection and won the conference’s Player of the Year award in 2024 after leading a first-place finish in the league plus a victory in the conference tournament championship to make it to the NCAA Tournament.
ESPN’s Jonathan Givony added that Townsend will also test the NBA Draft waters before deciding on a return to college at a potential new school:
“Oakland’s Trey Townsend, the Horizon League player of the year, will test the NBA Draft waters while entering the NCAA transfer portal, he told ESPN.”
Jack Gohlke may have been the face of Oakland’s little Cinderella run with his crazy shooting spree, especially in the Kentucky game, but Townsend was the engine of the operation, taking over the game offensively against Kentucky to hit some crucial buckets down the stretch, including a dagger 3 to put it away.
Then, in round two, Townsend gave everything he had to will Oakland to overtime, but his 30 points just weren’t quite enough to push the Golden Grizzlies on through to the second weekend. Still, with his pedigree (Horizon League POY) plus the impressive outings in the NCAA Tournament, Trey Townsend will have no shortage of suitors upon entering the portal.

For Townsend, the decision to leave couldn’t be easy, though. He’s spent four whole years at Oakland under Greg Kampe, the same school and coach his father played for decades prior. His mother also played for the Golden Grizzlies women’s team.
“I mean this whole journey of being a part of Oakland has been just such a dream come true,” Townsend said of his experience ahead of the NCAA Tournament.
“Not one moment is more special to me than another. Just being able to wear this uniform, this Oakland University uniform, and represent this university that I’ve been around my whole life that, like you said, both my parents were a part of and played basketball here, it’s been such a special thing for me.”
And now, he has a special March Madness run to cherish at the school his family is so connected to. So now, he’ll evaluate the options to better his hoops career this offseason.
