Oregon transfer DL Johnny Bowens III commits to UTSA
Johnny Bowens III, a former defensive lineman at Oregon, has announced his commitment to UTSA out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Bowens shared the selection of his next team in a post on social media on Friday.
Bowens appeared in three games last year in his lone season as a Duck.
Bowens only recorded statistics in their opener with two tackles during their 81-7 victory over Portland State. He also saw snaps in the 55-10 win against Hawaii and the 63-19 conference outcome against California.
Bowens, a native of Converse, Texas, which is just half hour northeast of the campus at UTSA, played high school football at Judson. He was a four-star prospect there as the No. 206 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also rated as a Top-25 DL in the class and a Top-40 prospect out of the state.
Bowens entered his name into the portal before the closing of the spring window. Upon his initial entry, other programs, including Texas, appeared interested in him. However, with the calendar now into July after that news of his transfer recruitment back in May, he has since ended up back home with his pick of the Roadrunners.

Per On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players, Bowens ranked at No. 301. That makes him the highest-rated addition for the program from these portal cycles. He also sat as the No. 22 DL on that list.
Bowens is the 14th portal pickup this offseason for UTSA. Half of those are for the defense with him coming in alongside Daemian Wimberly (SMU) on the defensive line.
