Oregon State quarterback Gevani McCoy plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced Saturday evening. He spent just one season in Corvallis after playing the first three years of his college career at Idaho.

This will mark the second transfer for McCoy, who began this year as the Beavers starting quarterback but ultimately lost the job in the final month of the season. He finished with 1,300 yards passing and three touchdowns to six interceptions.

Although his passing numbers do little to impress, he also provides mobility as he rushed for 328 yards and five touchdowns. That could make him a candidate for a starting job at a Group of Five school.

“Beaver Nation, after much thought and prayer, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal,” McCoy wrote. “This past year has been an incredible experience and I’m beyond grateful for our coaches, my teammates, the staff, and the amazing fans that showed out each week. I may be leaving but Corvallis will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything!”

McCoy committed to Idaho in the 2021 class out of Lawndale (CA) High School. He would go on to win the starting job as a redshirt freshman in 2022 and went on to win the Big Sky Freshman of the Year after throwing for 2,721 yards and 27 touchdowns to seven interceptions.

He followed that up with a 2023 campaign that earned him first team All-Big Sky. He threw for 2,910 yards and 15 touchdowns while also rushing for 188 yards and two scores.

Those numbers show that McCoy has skill as a passer and can hopefully find a better fit for himself at his next stop. He can officially enter the transfer portal when it opens on Dec. 9.
