Trey Townsend is reportedly down to two options in his choice out of the transfer portal.

CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander shared the update on Townsend, formerly of Oakland, on Twitter on Tuesday. He said that, at some point this week, he will be committing to either Arizona or Ohio State. That would remove several options from his eventual choice, including Michigan State.

“Source: Oakland grad transfer Trey Townsend—one of the best in the portal—will commit to Arizona or Ohio State this week,” Norlander wrote.

However, the Spartans shouldn’t be too concerned. At the end of the tweet, Norlander made it known that a different transfer, one that’s somewhat similar to Townsend, should be committing to come to East Lansing soon.

“Michigan St. was also involved, but Sparty is soon to add a transfer who plays a similar position,” added Norlander.

Townsend spent the past four years with the Golden Grizzlies, the alma mater of both of his parents. He started every appearance he had with the program in 129 total games.

In his career, Townsend has averaged 14.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 steals. He did so while shooting 50% from the field and 31.4% from three.

That included this last season as a senior where, as Horizon League Player of the Year, he had a career year at 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. The Golden Grizzlies made the NCAA Tournament by winning the Horizon League Tournament, which Townsend was the MVP of. They then reached the Round of 32 after an upset win over Kentucky.

Townsend entered the portal following the season to take the next step in his career. Upon his entry, he became the No. 85 overall transfer and the No. 15 SF. That rating comes according to On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players. He then immediately earned plenty of interest from programs across the country, including Arizona and Ohio State along with Michigan State, Michigan, and Louisville.

Now, as of today, Townsend is down to the Wildcats or the Buckeyes.

Arizona has had a rough start to the portal with no additions and only losses. Four players have transferred from Tucson already, including two starters in Oumar Ballo (Indiana) and Kylan Boswell (Illinois). That’s not to mention that Caleb Love, the Pac-12 of the Year, is testing for the 2024 NBA Draft.

As for Ohio State, they’ve also been busy with transfers ahead of their first season under Jake Diebler. The Buckeyes have lost five players to the portal in Roddy Gayle Jr. (Michigan) and Zed Key (Dayton) along with Scotty Middleton, Felix Okpara, and Bowen Hardman. In turn, though, they’ve added three quality pieces in a return by Meechie Johnson (South Carolina), a former five-star and top recruit in Aaron Bradshaw (Kentucky), and then Micah Parrish (San Diego State).
