Rhode Island guard Ray Allen III enters NCAA transfer portal
Rhode Island guard Ray Allen III has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Jamie Shaw has learned. Allen just wrapped up his freshman season with the Rams under head coach Archie Miller. However, the son of former NBA great Ray Allen will be looking to continue his college career elsewhere.
“Rhode Island freshman Ray Allen III has entered the transfer portal @On3sports has learned,” Shaw said via X. “Son of NBA Hall of Fame guard Ray Allen.”
Allen played in just one game during the 2023-2024 season, making his debut against Johnson & Wales on Nov. 22. He got two shots up in his two minutes on the court and finished with two points. However, an impact was made on the defensive end by securing a steal.
Coming out of Gulliver Prep in Miami, FL, Allen was ranked a three-star prospect per the On3 rankings. Allen was the No. 57 shooting guard in the country and the No. 23 player in the state of Florida. Prior to committing to Rhode Island as a preferred walk-on, Rutgers was leading per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.
In what has been a busy transfer portal window so far, Allen is player No. 506 to enter over the past week. While some programs are out there still focused on winning a national championship, others are already preparing for the 2024-2025 season.

Rhode Island wraps up second season under head coach Archie Miller
Miller just wrapped up his second season with the Rams but unfortunately finished with another losing record. Rhode Island went 12-20 overall and 6-12 against A-10 opponents in 2023-2024.
Not much went right but the defense was the main issue for Miller’s squad. According to Ken Pom, Rhode Island ranked No. 261 in Adj. Defense, 13th in the conference. Looking at the Adj. Offense numbers, the Rams were 11th compared to A-10 foes at No. 166.
Making the NCAA Tournament has not occurred since Dan Hurley was in charge. Rhode Island made back-to-back appearances in 2017 and 2018, winning a game each time. However, the Rams have not returned since Hurley left in favor of UConn.
Miller has been able to get to the NCAA Tournament out of the A-10, getting there with Dayton for four consecutive years. Rhode Island will be hoping his third season produces better results and gives the program a chance to hear its name called on Selection Sunday.
