Top D-II transfer Mikhail Pocknett schedules visit to Southern Indiana

King University (D-II) transfer Mikhail Pocknett has put a visit to Southern Indiana on the books for March 31. On3 is told that the 6-foot-6 sophomore is also talking with Buffalo about scheduling a visit.

Pocknett earned 1st-Team All-Conference Carolinas honors this season after averaging 22.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. He shot 52.2 percent from the field and added 1.8 steals per game.

This season, Pocknett made history as the first sophomore in King program history to score 1,000 career points. Over his two seasons, he has accumulated 1,209 points on 49.8 percent shooting.

As a D-II player, Pocknett was able to enter the Transfer Portal ahead of D-I players. He officially entered on March 10 and shortly after several programs – including Weber State, Liberty, Maine, Georgia Southern, Canisius, and Cal State Fullerton – reached out almost immediately.

As Pocknett begins this recruiting process, he has a clear idea of what he is looking for in his next school.

“I’m looking to go to a school where development is key,” Pocknett said. “And I want to go somewhere I can make a difference and impact winning.”

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II, and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including sports and names. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such asynchronous contact info, whether the player was on scholarship, and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
