Former Jackson State two-way star Travis Hunter was named the new No. 1 overall player in the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. Hunter entered the portal Sunday night, the day after Jackson State’s 41-34 Celebration Bowl loss to North Carolina Central.
Hunter finished his debut collegiate season with 19 total tackles, 15 solo tackles, eight pass deflections, two interceptions and one defensive touchdown. On offense, he had 18 catches for 190 yards and four touchdowns.
As a member of the Class of 2022, Hunter was an On3 Consensus 5-Star+ prospect out of Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 1 athlete in the class and the No. 2 overall prospect in the class.
Hunter opened up on his decision to transfer and what was next in his college football future.
“What’s next for me, first I want to thank Jackson, Mississippi for showing out and showing your boy some support,” Hunter said. “Everybody just respect my decision and yes I have entered the transfer portal. I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I’m just trying to look for a new home and I’m going take my time out in this decision and not rush this decision. Yes everyone wants to me to follow Coach Prime and I want to follow Coach Prime too, but I need to know if it’s a fit for me. If it’s not, I’m not going to go.”

Former Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders accepted the job at Colorado, but finished out the 2022 campaign with the Tigers. It is widely discussed that multiple Jackson State players will follow Sanders to Colorado.
Sanders was already ambitious during his introductory press conference with the Buffaloes.
“Those of you that we don’t run off, we’re going to try to make you quit,” Sanders said to his team. “That’s what the offseason is going to look like. I want ones that don’t want to quit. That want to work. That want to win. A heckuva lot of work. I want to get you to that breaking point. So I know what I got. I don’t want to get in a game and find out I got Jane when all off-season I had Tarzan. I got to figure it out now.”
Hunter addressed the Colorado topic directly on Sunday night.
“I’m not saying I’m committing to Colorado right now,” Hunter said. “Or that I’m never going to do it, but that’s not in my plan right now, to jump in the portal and join the team … I don’t know what’s next, for real … I’ve been just thinking about this hard. But the best decision for me was to enter the transfer portal.”
