The Virginia Tech Hokies will be down one quarterback heading into the 2024 season. On3 has just been informed that redshirt freshman Dylan Wittke has entered the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday. However, he did not enter alone, as running back Tralon Mitchell is also exiting the program in search of a new college football home for the fast-approaching 2024 season.

The news of Wittke’s decision to transfer should not come as a surprise to those who have been following the team during their spring practices. Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry recently revealed that he was using this time to figure out who would be the backup behind expected starter Kyron Drones.

The competition was between William Watson and Wikkte, who appeared to have the early leg up in the battle. Unfortunately for him, it appears that things might have shifted in Watson’s favor. During the Hokies spring game, Drones looked very much the part of starting quarterback, finishing the contest completing six of his 10 pass attempts for 122 yards and two passing touchdowns to go along with eight yards rushing. But when it came to the battle of the backups, Watson appeared to have more of an opportunity in comparison to Wittke.
