Wyoming EDGE Keelan Cox officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Friday evening, On3 has learned. He originally began his career with the Alabama Crimson Tide, before transferring to Wyoming.

He missed the 2022 season due to an injury. Cox spent one year at Alabama, but did not appear in any games for the Tide. He also spent some time at Tyler Junior College.

Before college, he graduated from Manvel high School, racking up 40 tackles and 7.5 sacks as a senior.

Wyoming had an excellent year this season, posting an overall record of 9-4, including a 5-3 record in the Mountain West Conference. It was the first nine-win season in program history since 1996, when the team went 10-2.

The Cowboys capped off the year with a thrilling 16-15 victory in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl. Wyoming kicker John Hoyland drilled a 24-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Cowboys to victory. He earned MVP honors in the bowl game, after he connected on all three of his field goal attempts, 34 yards, 52 yards, and the game-winner from 24 yards.

Cowboys running back Harrison Waylee, had 18 carries in the victory for 91 yards. Wide receiver Ayir Asante also hauled in a big catch of 26 yards to start the final-game winning drive for Wyoming.

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl retires

It was a storybook ending for Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl, who retired after this season. It marked the fourth season of eight or more wins during the Bohl era and the sixth winning season during his 10-year tenure as the Cowboys’ head coach. It was also the fourth bowl victory under Bohl, who announced his retirement on December 6th.

Craig Bohl ended his tenure as the longest serving head coach in Wyoming football history. He ended his college football coaching career with a record of 165-92 and a Cowboys’ record of 61-60. He ranks 13th among all current active NCAA Football head coaches in terms of wins, with 165 for his career.

The new head coach for Wyoming football is Jay Sawvel and he was announced as Bohl’s replacement on Dec. 6, 2023. Sawvel is the 33rd coach in Cowboys football history and has acted as the team’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach since February of 2020.

Wyoming will open up their 2024 football schedule with a trip to Tempe, Arizona, where they’ll face off against the Arizona State Sun Devils. That one is slated for Saturday, August 31st. A kick time has not yet been announced.
