”BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Defending champion Ferris State will play a Division II football playoff game Saturday without its coach because he has been suspended for players lighting cigars in the locker room after winning a national title last year.

"Self-pity's the greatest form of self-destruction, so I just got to suck it up and be a big boy," coach Tony Annese told WOOD-TV.

The Bulldogs will travel 60 miles in Michigan to play in-state rival Grand Valley State.

Annese's one-game playoff suspension isn't a total surprise; it was announced by the NCAA earlier this year.

"Technically speaking, I can be at the game. Just got to buy my own ticket. So I don't know if that's a good idea," he said.

In addition, Ferris State had to pay a $2,500 fine and $15,383 in cleaning and repair expenses. The McKinney, Texas, school district, where the 2022 championship game was played, has a strict no-tobacco policy.”

It's no joke, Bob. I suppose you didn't read, "The McKinney, Texas, school district, where the 2022 championship game was played, has a strict no-tobacco policy.”

We're talking a criminal act here. I heard that they were chewing snuff tobacco too. Copenhagen, no less. Disgusting. Throw the book at them! It's an outrage.

Texas with a No Tobacco policy is like Texas with a Vegetarians Only policy.

Yeah, I saw that. I’m sure the $15k “cleaning and repair expenses” were thoroughly warranted. Oh yeah.

I can’t get the article to load, but recall reading the players did this 2 years in a row - ‘21 and ‘22- and were told they couldn’t after winning the natty ’21.

I’ll be in my seat Saturday as the GV student gives a warm “F@&$ you, Ferris” chant early and often.

Anchor Up, Lakers!

Tony Annese is a hell of a coach. He led the Muskegon High Big Red to multiple state championships, then on to Grand Rapids CC who he took them to the JC national championship.

I went to Ferris State College for two years back in the 70's. We went to the first quarter of our freshmen year and never went back. I'm not sure they won a game the two years I was there. For years they were terrible until they hired Annese. He's led them to multiple championships. He's even got a couple of guys in the NFL.

Maybe they shouldn't be playing in high school stadiums in Texas. There are a lot of things in Texas that are ****** up, this being one.

Guess it's ok to walk around with my Ruger 357 or my 44 mag strapped to my belly, but would I be able to have a fine cigar hanging from my lips?
People are so silly today. Sometime they have to be shot, so others can see reality.
Just my opinion for now, cost of ammo is too expensive to waste on idiots.

Actually, talk around the game today was the team caused $80,000 in damages the two years they were there.
That is a bit more than the cigar smoking and seems to make more sense for the punishment.
Annese was permitted to be in the stands on his own dime, but not communicate with his staff. Supposedly he was caught doing that today.
