”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — In a historic appointment, Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi begins her tenure May 9, as the 19th leader of Pennsylvania’s 167-year-old land-grant university.

For Bendapudi, who grew up in a coastal city in India, leading Penn State is an opportunity of a lifetime given the transformative role higher education has played in her own family. Her father — who left India to attend university in the United States and make life better for his young family — paved a pathway for his daughter to follow.

“I know firsthand the power and purpose higher education can have for individuals, families and communities across the generations. Serving as Penn State’s president is the greatest professional honor of my life, and I will dedicate myself to advancing excellence for all Penn Staters,” Bendapudi said. “As president, I’m committed to creating opportunities to enable student success in and outside the classroom, supporting faculty and staff in their professional and academic endeavors, and encouraging continued partnership and investment in Penn State by our community, friends and the commonwealth.””

And,

”“I extend my deepest gratitude to President Barron for his outstanding leadership,” Bendapudi said. “Penn State has experienced incredible growth and advancements over his tenure, and today we are in an excellent position to continue to thrive while meeting challenges ahead. As with any successor, it’s my responsibility and mission to build on progress and help Penn State reach even greater heights across each of our campuses.”

As she begins her presidency, the University is among the top academic and research institutions nationally and is celebrating a record-breaking philanthropic campaign, among other significant accomplishments.

“President Bendapudi is uniquely prepared to help the University continue to excel in many areas, including academics, student experience, and scientific research and innovation,” said Penn State Board of Trustees Chair Matt Schuyler. “She has a deep appreciation for our tradition of excellence coupled with an innovative spirit focused on strengthening our communities throughout the state and beyond.””

And,

”Even as she continued to teach, Bendapudi put her expertise in customer loyalty and consumer behavior into practice in the private sector. Along with consulting for some of the world’s largest companies and organizations — from Proctor & Gamble to the U.S. Army — she became the executive vice president and chief customer officer for Huntington National Bank, a top-30 U.S. bank with $55 billion in assets at the time.”

And,

“Something I see uniquely at Penn State is a sense of pride, belonging and family,” Bendapudi said. “My goal is to continue to foster that sense of belonging for every student, employee and alumni, and help them find a way to make this special place their own.”

Polite golf clap for now.

As we’ve all learned over the years with PSU administrators, talk is cheap. Let’s see what she actually does to reverse the falling academic ranking under Barron and her plans to lower tuition costs. It will be interesting to see her thoughts on potentially closing, (or not closing), some of the smaller branch campuses as well.

All this is fluff. What matters is becoming cost competitive, and I see few signs of that happening.
I live in SE Pa., which used to be PSU turf. In the last two months, three families have said that PSU priced itself out of the competition.

Anyone else get the 'Raise Penn State' email with Barron basking in all his chubby glory over the $2bn fundraising effort? Get some dip fellas...

Barrons’ legacy celebrated as Greater Penn State campaign hits $2.166 billion

When the University recently celebrated the success of its current campaign, A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence, in surpassing its goal, the evening was also a fond farewell to Eric and Molly Barron. At the April 22 event in the Bryce Jordan Center, students from Penn State’s acclaimed Musical Theatre program offered a tribute to the Barrons in song and dance, and University leaders, including Board of Trustees Chair Matthew W. Schuyler, offered their thanks for President Barron’s leadership and the couple’s dedication to the Penn State community. The greatest tribute, however, came from the more than 684,000 donors who have made gifts to the campaign’s three imperatives: opening the doors to a Penn State degree and a brighter future for students from every background, creating the transformative experiences that allow students and faculty to tap their full potential for leadership, and impacting the world through advances in human health, resource security, and economic development.

“This campaign has been very personal for me,” Eric Barron told the audience. “As President, I believe that we MUST become A Greater Penn State for 21st Excellence, and the priorities of this campaign reflect my understanding of what true leadership will mean in the years ahead.”

Five things you might not know about President Neeli Bendapudi

See the link below. From the article:

“1 — “Neeli” means “blue”

My name, Neeli Bendapudi, is pronounced just like it’s spelled, and I tend to go by Neeli. In Sanskrit my name translates to the “sky’s color,” so it seems like I was born to wear — and cheer on — the Blue and White!”

No wonder she got the job. She must know the color when the sky is falling.

We’re lucky to have her. This board is full of idiots who have accomplished nothing compared this woman.
Yeah, everyone PSU hires is a home run........ until they ain't. She fired Barbour, which is a good start. Still has a lot of work to do before we canonize her.

Did Nelli really fire Sandy? Wasn’t Sandy already on the way out?
Barbour's contract ran through August 2023. Then in March she announces that she is retiring in a matter of months.

Someone new to a job would normally wish to retain as many key employees who are perceived to be doing a good job, unless they have a replacement in mind. Doesn't appear that Dr. Bendapudi had someone or that she employed her reportedly considerable persuasive powers to get Sandy to stick around. Draw your own conclusion.

First, Barbour was not fired. Second, no one is canonizing her. Just treat her with respect. Pretend if you have to.

Respect Barbour? Never happen.

The canonization comment was about Dr. Bendapudi. Part of the work she has to do is to upgrade the reading comprehension skills of PSU graduates so that they don't make the same mistake.

“UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Even before taking the reins as Penn State’s 19th president this month, Neeli Bendapudi spent much of the spring traveling across the commonwealth on her listening tour of the University’s campuses.

Bendapudi said the listening tour provided her with a stronger sense of Penn State’s land-grant mission and the campuses as engines of economic development in their regions. “If you think about the land-grant mission and the promise of social mobility, the campuses show that in true color,” she said. “It’s palpable when you’re on the various campuses — the access, the affordability, the promise.””

I guess it would have been harsh had Neeli shut down the commonwealth campuses on her first visits. Let’s see what she does next month.

I would hope they’ve already studied this but it would be interesting to know if there is anyway they could incentivize some students to enroll at the commonwealth campuses by lowering tuition there and somehow coordinate curriculums among the various locations to specialize in various majors. So for example if a student wanted an inexpensive PSU degree in elementary education they could go to a particular campus for the first two (or all four) years at half the cost of UP. It would require some sort of faculty realignment to try to make each specialty campus more efficient so it could operate with lower tuition but also higher enrollment presumably. Anyway, it’s a complicated problem.
