All incoming students are now required to get one of these on their foreheads to signify they ..."belong"

During his combat in Phillipines theater and capture in Bataan, my dad and his brother solders/prisoners were made to stand at attention each morning to honor the raising of the Japanese flag....they called the morning ceremony the raising of the flaming a$$hole

SIAP: Pretty good interview from State College.com.

It certainly seemed like your hiring as president was frictionless in that even the kind of most vocal and critical members of the board have spoken very positively of you. How would you characterize your relationship with the Board of Trustees?

NB:
I am so thankful to each and every one of them. One of the things is that every single one of them that’s on the board, whatever their positions, whether they agree on everything or not, they all love Penn State. They are not doing it because they need a line on their resume.”

We’re screwed. 😞

I’d like to know whose idea it was to put her signature on the diplomas recently issued.

Penn State’s new president Neeli Bendapudi on her early priorities — and some personal favorites

See the link below. From the article:

”It’s been about a month since Neeli Bendapudi took over as Pennsylvania State University’s first female president and first president of color.

Bendapudi, 58, says it’s too early to lay out her full agenda for the more than 97,000-student school. But the former president of the University of Louisville shared some of her early priorities during an interview earlier this month from her office at Penn State’s main campus.

While she officially became president on May 9, Bendapudi — who will earn an annual salary of $950,000 under a contract that runs through the 2026-27 academic year — arrived on campus seven weeks before that to work alongside outgoing president Eric J. Barron. She’s already visited all but two of the university’s 19 Commonwealth or branch campuses across the state. An early priority, she said, will be to make sure they get the attention they need to flourish.”

And,

”Bendapudi also attended her first meeting of Big Ten Conference presidents last weekend. During the interview, she acknowledged the debate over compensation for college athletes, something that Jay Paterno, a Penn State board member and son of the late football coach Joe Paterno, wrote about recently. He advocated for legislation that would allow athletes to organize and participate in collective bargaining, and require major universities “to develop a revenue sharing plan” that would augment scholarships athletes already receive.

“The idea that athletes should have an opportunity to take part and benefit in some way, [given] what they contribute to the university, it makes sense to me,” Bendapudi said. “I just don’t want us to ever lose sight that our primary goal is the education of these young people because at some point, there is time beyond the buzzer, for anyone. Our role is to make sure we keep up the academic promise to them.””

And,

”Next month, she’ll address trustees at her first regular board meeting as president, where the board will likely set tuition for next year. While Bendapudi wasn’t ready to say whether she’ll back an increase, she said tuition hikes are acceptable if additional money is applied to student aid to reduce the burden on those who can least afford it.”

That statement is more than a little scary.

You have to make it more expensive to make it less expensive? You just can't make this up.

President Bendapudi is getting very favorable press very early in her tenure. She is very astute at PR so far and hopefully this goes way beyond just that, but clearly she a very popular figure.

The fat cats pay for the unwashed. Nothing new.

o_O
If it were only that simple. I'm willing to bet that there are a lot of students attending PSU whose families are not in the "fat cat" category, but won't qualify for the financial aid that Dr. Bendapudi is contemplating. Yet, these students/families will get saddled with higher tuition since, last time I looked, it's not indexed to any ability-to-pay scale. So, these students/families will need to borrow more to pay for the educations of the "unwashed."

It was a poorly thought out statement, if any thought was given to it at all. Unfortunately, this is all too common among educational elites.

Are we scared, yet?

It’s all relative. Importantly, someone will pay, somehow.

I'm all for providing those from economically disadvantaged situations the opportunity for an education. But find the financing for it elsewere, not on the backs of folks who are already stretching their resources to pay for their own kids. Better targeting would be be to hit some truly "fat cat" donors

Good to be here. Took me awhile to get here…

Firstly, her energy level is impressive. She has engaged the PSU stakeholders (students, alum, legislators, etc…) extensively in her short time on the job.

Secondly, she listens intently and doesn’t believe she has all of the answers.

Thirdly, she is unafraid to make decisions. For example, prior to beginning her tenure as President, she decided to change the responsibilities of the CFO so that one person would be accountable for the entirety of the spend. Rod Erickson unilaterally changed this in January, 2012 at which time he gave the Provost responsibility for the spend in Academia and the CFO the G&E spend. Additionally, she appears to have hired an outstanding Athletics Director.

Finally, she appreciates our history and the importance of Success with Honor.
Any chance she will kill the art museum (aka Barron's Folly)?
