See the link below. From the article:

”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State administrators and the University’s Board of Trustees will gather in a special off-cycle meeting on Dec. 9 to consider a presidential appointment.

The public meeting beginning at 11 a.m. will take place in Deans Hall at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center and will be livestreamed at wpsu.psu.edu/trustees. Members of the public may view the livestream or attend in person. The public meeting will also include a meeting of the Subcommittee on Compensation.”

We’re so screwed. 😞

Given their history, I have less than total confidence that they will get a dynamic leader to take the school out of the mess they have created.
The farther away from the JS Scandal we get, the higher the odds of a competent appointment.

Several months ago I predicted the next President would be a minority or female candidate or perhaps both, presumably a highly qualified individual. Tomorrow we are likely to get the name of the name of that nominated individual, and hopefully that candidate will be an excellent choice. I also predict that whomever is chosen, this Board won’t like the result.

Hopefully they'll choose the best candidate irrespective of D&I considerations.

Sandy Barbour will be available......

Seriously, I thought the same as you. I'd put money on the nominee being a female and/or minority who has great qualifications and who has already been fully vetted. They'll want to avoid the embarrassment of what they did with the failed nominee before Barron.

Mess? Based on your simmering insights? Penn State graduates more stem students per year than any other university in the country.

Haven’t you heard? Per Rivals and this board, our academic rankings are in the sh|tter, and our students are stupid because the school only cares about getting out-of-state tuition.

I suspect it will be someone about to be convicted of a crime. So yes, it could be Kenny. More likely a university president with baggage.

I never heard back after I submitted my application. Perhaps they will surprise me with a call during the meeting tomorrow.

I realized we aren't asking the right question. Is President of PSU an elite job? I'd say Harvard, Yale, any Ivy League school is an elite job. Are we elite enough to deserve an elite president?

Yes, I do understand the difference between running an Ivy League school and running PSU which is a massive organization. On a serious note, we need a CEO type with good vision and the drive to achieve that vision. A little charisma would be nice too. It can't be that hard to find someone in academia with legitimate leadership skills, right? Right?

Barry did a video - which is included in the Twitter link earlier in the thread - which highlighted some examples of current University Presidents who have the types of characteristics that might be appropriate and necessary for the job.

There haven’t been many if any actual serious suggestions of viable candidates floated on this board. Condolisa Rice is not coming to Penn State.

Much more fun, I guess, to make unimaginative, unclever snarks about the board and Barron (the onion dip meme jumped the shark years ago) than put any effort into suggesting real candidates for Barron's successor. No doubt, whoever is elected tomorrow, this board will quickly disparage him/her.

Assuming the leading candidates are in academia, I’m guessing few here know who they could be. I don’t. Leadership in academics is not my forte. Sure, I could look up presidents and provosts at various top colleges and universities, but chances are, I would not be familiar with any of them. With that said, yes, I will hate whomever they hire. 😁

People, including me, have no idea what it takes to run a huge public university with a law school, a medical school with a large health system, with campuses all over the state, and significant reliance on public funding, federal research grants and contracts, and private support. They use superficial benchmarks like US News and World Reports as their metric, and the won loss record of the football team as their evaluation of success.

Exactly. Penn State is in a somewhat unique situation with regard to what it encompasses. The job requires understanding the big picture and pushing to a place that makes the picture look better. Unfortunately, I don't think the BOT can see any picture aside from what they look at in the mirror every morning. Unfortunately, they look in the mirror and say "damn that looks good."

People can certainly disagree on what the best metric is to measure a university’s standing. You can dismiss X or Y as lacking in 1 way or another but I’d ask for some ranking authority that states PSU has been improving. I’m certainly open to opposing views.

We hear a lot about how the university’s rankings are falling under Barron. We also hear a lot about how US News (or whoever) is lacking in their evaluation criteria.

What we never seem to hear (that I’ve seen) is some publication or educational authority saying Penn State is improving in standing. If you have that, please post a link. I’d love to read it.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s research enterprise ranks first nationally, tied with Johns Hopkins University, in the breadth and depth of its expertise, according to the latest National Science Foundation rankings of Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) research expenditures by key fields and subfields in science and engineering, released in January 2021.

also the Princeton Review in their

Top 50 Best Undergrad Programs for Entrepreneurs in 2022

Named PSU number 21. But again I think most of these ranking articles and press releases are pretty bogus and just ways of twisting data around which is sometimes used for PR purposes. Actual quality measurement is much more complicated than a few simple equations. In fact, some kids do better than others for all sorts of reasons.
