Dr. Neeli Bendapudi

Neeli Bendapudi is the 18th President of the University of Louisville. Selected by the UofL Board of Trustees in April 2018, Bendapudi came to Louisville from the University of Kansas where she served as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.

Since becoming President, Bendapudi has worked toward making the university a great place for students to learn, a great place for faculty and staff to work, and a great place for alumni and the community to invest. Under her leadership, the university will celebrate diversity, foster equity and strive for inclusion.1639028012964.jpeg

People, including me, have no idea what it takes to run a huge public university with a law school, a medical school with a large health system, with campuses all over the state, and significant reliance on public funding, federal research grants and contracts, and private support. They use superficial benchmarks like US News and World Reports as their metric, and the won loss record of the football team as their evaluation of success.
I doubt the Board even has a criteria list as thorough as yours. They probably only have two check boxes:
___ Kiss my arse
___ Kiss them arse

Edit: and yes, I will not like whoever they hire, because they are them. Mostly, appointed stooges.

So, what would Penn Stater's think of this President? Led a University that was ranked dead last in it's conference. In fact, not only dead last, but more than 100 spots (100!) below the next most lowly regarded University.
And had a history of issues wrt lack of transparency and accountability.

What would one think?

I think the marketing expertise trumps all that. :)

Nobody from Louisville should be getting hired for anything anywhere based on what's been happening there for the last almost decade. Sigh.

Several months ago I predicted the next President would be a minority or female candidate or perhaps both, presumably a highly qualified individual. Tomorrow we are likely to get the name of the name of that nominated individual, and hopefully that candidate will be an excellent choice. I also predict that whomever is chosen, this Board won’t like the result.

In all fairness, she/her has only been at louisville since 2018. I don’t know how much a new president can change a university’s profile in three years.

Shouldn't a World Class University be expected to procure a new leader with some track record of success?

Neeli Bendapudi -- Supposed to be named new president. Current university president at Louisville. Yikes.

It's all about the buzz words...
  • Transparency
  • Inclusion
  • Diversity
You'll see them repeatedly in a press release for the hiring of any university president. Saying them is one think but putting them into practice when the going gets tough is something else entirely.

The buzz words I'd like to hear are "quality education" and "affordable tuition".

It was a certainty that this position would be filled by someone from the "DEI" realm. Regardless, is Louisville the type of place Penn State should be hiring Presidents from? I mean, I get that mandating it be a woman and a minority is going to limit the search, but Louisville?

Admittedly haven’t read up on her too much, but initial reaction is a very underwhelming hire. Wouldn’t expect anything less from our BOT.

Much more fun, I guess, to make unimaginative, unclever snarks about the board and Barron (the onion dip meme jumped the shark years ago) than put any effort into suggesting real candidates for Barron's successor. No doubt, whoever is elected tomorrow, this board will quickly disparage him/her.

So the board's (small "b") responsibility is to find "real candidates for Barron's successor?" Of course, this would be the first place the Board (capital "B") would look for suggestions.

I guess we will see what kind of leader she is when we hear her speak. I judge leadership on how that can articulated their ideas in public speaking or speaking to the people they lead. Barron , IMO, could not speak well as a leader and did not inspire leadership. I base this on my 30+ years working and experiencing various leaders that were great and leaders that were leaders in title only. Just because they were at Louisville makes no diff to me. Andy Reid was just a a QB coach before becoming a Head Coach.

I think you're being rhetorical. If not, I'd like to point you to the last high profile hire made by this BOT:

In the Army we call this f*** up, move up.

Does she like football?

In all seriousness, think where massive amounts of money for universities are coming from and the priorities of the politicians handing it out. Now, what would you think is the best way to get that money? Understand that and you'll understand how the bot prioritizes credentials..

DEI hire (used to be called affirmative action) because her record speaks for itself. "Forbes Magazine ranks the University (Louisville) 431st among 650 universities, colleges, and service academies." Penn State ranks #155 on the same list, and has been dropping in the rankings under the leadership of President Chip Dip.

I don’t understand the point of the couple tweets about how long this was being discussed. Isn’t this almost always true for somebody that’s a sitting university president? Aren’t a majority of roles filled this way?

Those are from Louisville folks - and are related to her actions in her last few months at Louisville. You can research that for yourself.

It could depend on the direction of change. Up is harder to achieve than down.
