”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State rose 22 places to tie for No. 100 in the world in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, released Oct. 8, placing the University in the top 5% globally among 2,092 ranked institutions. In addition, Penn State rose four places to No. 38 among all U.S. universities and ranked No. 17 among U.S. public institutions. Penn State was the top-ranked public university in Pennsylvania.

“Times Higher Education is one of the most highly regarded indicators of excellence for universities around the world,” said Sabine Klahr, interim vice provost for Penn State Global. “International students, parents, alumni, sponsors and partners use global rankings as one of the primary measures of Penn State’s strength as a world-class academic and research institution. Returning to the global top 100 demonstrates that the institution’s excellence continues to be recognized around the world. This is a testament to our faculty who conduct extraordinary research to address the critical challenges the world faces today, while demonstrating excellence in teaching and mentoring our students.”

Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings are considered one of the three most respected international university ranking systems, along with the QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities. For this ranking, THE evaluates research-intensive universities around the globe, growing from 200 universities in 2004 to 2,092 ranked institutions in 2025 — an increase of 185 universities compared to 2024.”

Nice to see UVA at 163, Dartmouth at 168, and Notre Dame at 196. Kinda funny that WVU is listed as "Reporter" but no ranking and if you filter on schools in the US it is last on the list.

It's always good to kick an IVY as badly as we did on this listing.

Neeli is kicking her feet up on her desk with a cigar and brandy a scone and latte while having a good laugh at many schools today.

This is as silly as we would beat bama cause we’re ranked higher. All things equal ($) you sending your kid to state or uva/D and ND?

Well. I live in South Bend, tailgate and attend about half the homes games every year, and have multiple friends who are ND professors. Sent my oldest to IU. Have a few friends who graduated from UVa.

If I want my kid to have a better chance at ending up an insufferable ******* who cares more about money and status than being a good person, I’m probably sending them to an Ivy or UVa.

If I want them to end up as a normal functioning adult with a halfway decent set of values, I’m fine with almost any state school.

But to each their own I guess.

But, “What’s your net worth?”

This is what you’re up against.

Right on the nose.

Now that’s not to say that state schools don’t have the same douchebags that those other schools do too. I’ve been to IU enough times to be able to pick out the Carmel parents pretty easily. But taken as a whole, you’re going to get more normal people from state schools.

My wife did recruiting and experienced that EXACT thing. 25yo Harvard MBAs didn’t crank out work, they challenged, argued and asked to present cool mba stuff to group presidents and pouted when asked to crank out work.
but I’d also argue your kid should be in yours and your partners image 98% BEFORE they go to college.
Son1 LOVED the UVA visit and he LOVED the ND visit. Didn’t apply to UVA, a sad no letter from ND (missed dinn and wet eyes)

To be clear, the majority of Notre Dame students and alums are good folks. But that have a larger group of jerks than you’ll find at a state school. Instead of fratty douches, they’re just Domer douches.

As far as your other point, we did parenting a little differently. We more or less let our kids do their own thing as long as they acted like decent humans who treated others with dignity of respect. That’s about the only value we really cared about. Because of that, we don’t worry about how the outside world will affect them. I’ve always argued that if you’re steering your kid towards a school because it shares your “values” you’re not parenting, you’re indoctrinating.

You're going to get a lot more of everything at a state school, because they're bigger. Except for brainiacs (you might find the same amount, due to the lower percentage at state schools, but larger enrollment).

You'll find lots of pampered kids at state schools, as well ... they're just, on average, dumber, or less motivated, than the pampered kids at the Ivies. Exceptions exist at both, however - enough that you can find your "people" at either.
