See the link below. From the article:

”Penn State President Eric J. Barron's wide-ranging efforts have touched nearly every facet of campus life, including promoting greater access and affordability; bolstering the University's support for student veterans; positioning Penn State as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship across the commonwealth; and growing the University’s world-class research enterprise.

He has been a leader on the national stage, serving on a number of high-profile organizations and efforts, including promoting higher education’s work in community and economic development, helping to pass laws that promote safety in fraternities and sororities, and advocating for the success of student-athletes.“

The article goes on to list barren’s “Major initiatives and accomplishments”.

I don’t envy Neeli.

I don't think he achieved this goal from the artical:

  • Access and affordability: Making sure students are able to afford a high-quality Penn State degree has been a top priority for the University under Barron’s leadership. The collective efforts aimed at access and affordability were unified under the “Achieve Penn State” initiative. Penn State has taken significant steps to keep the cost of tuition in check while also providing support to help students graduate on time and manage debt.

Affordability my arse. The amount of fees that hit families with post-tuition bill sux balz.

When I saw the greater affordability part I stopped reading because I knew whatever followed would be more bullshat.

Maybe barren has a different definition of affordability than we do. Must be a misunderstanding.

Agreed. That is an out and out lie.
Under his inept leadership, the school’s academic profile has fallen appreciably, and that has been largely due to the school being one of, if not the, most expensive public universities in this country.
A disaster.
And just as bad, given how horrid the university of Louisville is, I am fearful about this new head.

One of the aspects of affordability is the ability to finish in 4 years instead of 5, which he takes credit for. I don’t know whether or not this is true but I suppose there is data available to verify it. Does anyone have the actual data which shows the trend line?

Since no one was able to dispute the assertion that he lowered the cost of a PSU education by enabling a significant proportion of students to get their degree in 4 years (or less) instead of 5, I will assume that either it is a correct assertion, or just that no one on this board is willing to give him credit for his well deserved accomplishments. This after all is usually a board where the height of meaningful input rarely rises above onion dip humor.

A few questions:

Were students at peer schools graduating faster than PSU students (e.g., 4 years versus 5)? If so, why?

What did barren do to enable students to earn their degrees faster? Factors such as course load, internships, and student motivation influence the time for a student to graduate. What did barren do?

PSU is still more expensive per year than peer schools. If more PSU students are graduating in four years than five now, they are still paying more for a PSU degree than are students graduating from other schools in four years.

What did barren do and did it have a measurable impact on the perception of the affordability of a PSU degree?

Why do you misspell his name in every post? It’s idiotic.
