Starting with the 2000-2001 academic year, and not including this year, MSU’s Big 3 sports have completed 24 full SEC competition seasons for football and men’s basketball, and only 23 for baseball due to the COVID year.

It may or may not be surprising to know, but MSU is collectively under .500 overall in SEC play in ALL of the Big 3 sports over that time.

The winning percentages - this millenium - in SEC play for the Big 3 sports are as follows:

.495
.480
.350

Now for the question - name the MSU Big 3 sport for each of those 3 winning percentages.

Basketball. Baseball. Football.
That’s my guess as well
Basketball
Baseball
Football

Too many 1-7 seasons in football over that span to have anywhere close to a .500 record.

Smart mofos over here.

But, obviously a lot has changed in the landscape of college sports with NIL and the portal in recent years.

So, a bonus question. Here are the percentages for only the 3 completed years since both NIL and open transfers have been allowed:

.444
.389
.208

Same question. And when you answer both, maybe you’ll know what the answer SHOULD be everytime you need to fill in the “We’re a ________ school” blank.

I'll say this about baseball. 6 of our worst years over the past 50 years is 2008-2010, 2022, 2023 and possibly 2025.

However I feel we just need the right coach and we can be over .500 in baseball every year.

I'm afraid NIL and portal have killed any chance for footballl. We simply can't keep good football players for more than a year.

We can hardly hope to be over .500 in sec in football for any kind of extended time frame. Even Mullen was only better than 500 once or maybe twice. (Not looking it up)
I don’t, however, believe we’re doomed to lose every good player after they break out. It’s a bit of a “moneyball” situation, but our staff knows which guys are worth their asking price and which can be replaced.
