Didn't we once have a men's team that was regularly ranked high? Was our Golf / Club Mgt program once Nationally recognized?

She's very good. And the MSU ladies team won the SEC tourney this year. Would love to see them make some noise in the NCAA's next year.

in the 90's, we were one of 4 schools with PGM program. No idea how many there are now.
Ferris State had the first PGM program, and ours was second, starting in 1985. They started adding more schools in the 90s, and there are at least 18 now.

In 1984 I went and sat across the desk from the PGM Academic Advisor ?? Jones (Allen or Alex ?) and told him I wanted to enroll in the PGM program.
One of the first questions he asked me was what was my handicap.
When I said I’m not really sure, maybe a 16 he immediately handed some papers back to me and said when I got it down to a 2 or better to come back and see him.
Needless to say I never went back to see him.
I believe he died of a heart attack on a golf course in Birmingham in the early 90’s during an Alumni/Bulldog Club event.

That's awesome. Congratulations to Julia!

Acheiving that level of golf success took lots of time and effort . . . and lots of talent.

I hope she can keep it up. There's lots of money to be made in women's pro golf.

I'm a fan.

That's wild.
Freshman year 25 years ago, there were easily more players closer to a 16 than a 2.
Most of the higher handicap group left after that first year though.

There really wasn't a firm handicap requirement for acceptance into the program, you just knew that ultimately you would have to pass the PGA Playing Test as part of your PGA certification and a graduation requirement.
I think the 36 hole score at MSU'S course was 158, so a pair of 79s meant you passed.

I Though it was 155ish. 36 hole rating plus 15. I think State was around a 70 from the blues. I don’t know if they had to play from the tips.

Good Post. At 61 I think I can learn more watching the Skirts plus the Eye Candy. I would pull a groin' trying to immitate a young PGA Dude's Swing these days. I've always found it interesting how competitive The Ladies are with the men on 150ish approach shots but are so weak putting comparing to the men. Must be a Math / Geometry thing.

Could have been. It's been a moment, so I may misremeber the rating as being about 71.5.
Regardless, yes the limit was 15 over the course rating for 36 holes.

With our luck, she will announce her school as Escuela de Alto (Blume High School) in Spain. **
