Wow, weak showing by Japan on the PKs.
yeah, not the best PK sequence I've ever seen. The 1st Japanese kicker hit it relatively soft, and only halfway between the center of the goal and the goalpost. It was an easy save for the Croatian GK. The 2nd Japanese kicker, pretty predictably, kick it to the other side. It was a pretty good shot, but the GK easily blocked it. The 3rd Japanese kicker was the only one that really had a good shot. He hit it really hard, and his body language indicated he was going to his left (where the GK dove) but the shot was to his right. And the fourth Japanese kicker hit it to his left where it was easily blocked. 3 of the 4 hit shots were along the ground. The only one that lifted it at all didn't lift it a lot, but that was the one that scored.
By comparison, the Croatian kickers varied the height, the location, etc. They were far more proficient at taking PKs (or in their execution of the PKs).
I felt bad for the Japanese team. They really played well in the tournament, and for a large portion of today's match. At times, they passed up shot opportunities to make an extra pass, though many of those extra passes ended up with no shot being taken.
