Watching TN vs IN, TN seems to be lacking continuity and look to be playing as 5 individuals. Not sure if that is fixable with the roster they have.
Makes senseI wish we would get her but to me, reading the tea leaves, she is going to Stanford most likely. It will be a big result of NIL actually. She just signed with Nike and Stanford is a Nike school. We are Under Armor. I am not sure how that would work that she is with Nike and would have to wear Under Armor here. That is about to really muddy waters with NIL and players. I think NIL should be off limits to "brands" that schools use.
I still thinks she stays out west but don’t think her signing with Nike means that she has to pick a Nike school. Henny had an endorsement with Reebok. I think she just has to promote Nike on her own time. It would seem to really muddy the waters if Nike can tell a high school recruit that they have to choose a Nike school. Why would she even bother visiting if she knew she would not be able to go here. She signed the deal before her visit. I will still be shocked if she chooses us but don’t think the Nike deal is a deal breaker.Makes sense
I read on NC State board that she had a nagging shoulder injuryRivers has been one of the first off the bench all 3 games the Pack has played. Played 20/22 mins respectively the first two. Not sure why she didn’t play in the 2nd half yesterday. Her ten minutes played were all in one check in. I doubt she’s in Moore’s dog house but we’ll see how she’s utilized Wednesday when they play UNCC.
Sure she may choose Stanford but it won't be because of the Nike deal. Azzi Fudd has a deal with Under Armour but she plays for UConn a Nike school. You reap the benefits of the brand deal based on what you do off the court.I wish we would get her but to me, reading the tea leaves, she is going to Stanford most likely. Mulkey claims she made that schedule because she didn't know she was going to get Angel Reese yet. In no way should a power 5 should be playing this schedule, with or without Reese. They also play all but two games in the non-conference at home too.LSU is 4-0 averaging 111ppg
There are 369 teams ranked by RPI in D-1 WBB
The four teams LSU has played were last year ranked
349
346
336
276
You really have to work hard to schedule that type of talent
And one of the “away” games is VS Tulane in New OrleansMulkey claims she made that schedule because she didn't know she was going to get Angel Reese yet. In no way should a power 5 should be playing this schedule, with or without Reese. They also play all but two games in the non-conference at home too.
Agree, Angel Reese shouldn’t have impacted their scheduling process at all!Mulkey claims she made that schedule because she didn't know she was going to get Angel Reese yet. According to ESPN we have the #2 class.
I am stressing about Feagin not getting minutes! I love her game and do not want her to feel the need to transferDunk was incredible! Questions for after the game, is Johnson OK after leaving the game early, and why didn’t Feagin get minutes outside if the 4th quarter?
Watkins just dunked on Clemson!
I didn't get the impression Johnson left early. She played 20 minutes. 2nd most on team. 12 more than Fletcher.Dunk was incredible! Questions for after the game, is Johnson OK after leaving the game early, and why didn’t Feagin get minutes outside if the 4th quarter?
I was thinking the exact same thing! Can’t wait to see the 11 freshmen that are better than Ashlyn Watkins
Excellent analysis. I would add that Stanford had a hell of a time defending Zia when she was a sophomore and they had Kiana Williams and Anna Wilson. I have no idea how they match up against her Sunday. Tara doesn't like to play zone, but it might be her best option.A little early but here it is
Stanford preview
Stanford is one of the handful teams that have a chance against us. They are the only team that can match our height and frontcourt depth.
They start 6’4” Cameron Brink and 6’3” Kiki Iriafen (ear e ah fen)They bring off the bench 6’5” Ashton Prechtel, 6’7” Lauren Betts and 6’1” Dunking Fran Belibi. Brink is reigning DPOY in PAC12, Iriafen is a starter after being buried on the bench as a Fr. No one else in the country comes this close to us. Belibi is their version of Watkins. Prechtel is tough and a good 3 pt shooter. Betts is the National Top recruit.
They have a superstar in Haley Jones. A 3pt terror in Hannah Jump 58%. Point Guard.... as our Mr Wellbaum often and articulately reminds us, its all about PG!! They have started 2 Fr., Talana Lepolo and Agnes Emma Nnopu. Neither really score and Lepolo has an excellent 3:1 assists to turnover ratio. Doesn’t really matter, in crunch possessions the ball will in Haley Jones’ hands.
If you compare stats, we are pretty close to mirror images with a few notable exceptions. They shot better and more often from 3pt than we do. They have more 3pt shooters than we do. They only turn the ball over 11 times a game. We are at 20. WE GOTTA PROTECT THE EFFING BALL!!
Their schedule so far is very weak. Maryland is better than anyone they have played, shockingly I think Clemson is also(but that could be my east coast bias). Last year Stanford fell apart in the 3rd quarter. The CLA crowd was amazing!! Go fams. Maples will not be that intimidating.
Stanford runs an offense that is both difficult to master for its own players and difficult to defend. This is our third game in three years. I think DS has cracked the code.
I expect a close four quarter game. The game will be in the 60’s unless it is a surprise blowout. We are in my opinion better and more athletic but by a small margin. They are a better shooting team.
1. Protect the ball
2. Wear Haley Jones out. Make her work hard on D.
3. Rebound, rebound, rebound. Stanford out rebounded us solidly in the first half last year. Cannot let that happen
4. Go down low early and often. Brink is a good defender but cannot handle Boston or Cardoso’s heft and strength. She will have to have double team help and she is foul prone.
5. Deny their O access to the high post elbow. It is the spot on the floor from where they run the O most effectively
As always enjoy your insights and sharing deep stats. I think Jones gets a full dose of Beal and Amihere. I don’t think they have the physical strength down low to hold up. Height yes, strength NO!Some observations from looking at the advanced stats:
-- Ashlyn Watkins' player efficiency rating (PER) is 7 points higher than Aliyah Boston (who led the nation in that stat last season) and over twice Saxton's PER. Watkins' defensive efficiency rating is higher than Beal's. Obviously, it's a small sample size and I don't expect her to maintain that all year. Nevertheless, coach can't ignore that a player is performing that well, no matter her age, and she has been rewarding Watkins with playing time. All the focus on her dunk shouldn't take away from her all-around game, especially defensively. Her ability to switch on to just about any opposing player on the court makes our team defense better.
-- Zia and Brea are play much better offensively, through 3 games anyway, than last year. I think Dawn said something about seniors playing like seniors. Right now they are performing like players who have started a gazillion college games.
-- The concern, not surprisingly, is Raven/Fletcher/Hall/Cooper. We knew it would take a while for them to settle into their roles. I think Dawn gave Thompson some run against Clemson to see if she could make a case for more playing time. Out of all the possibilities, the advance stats suggest Raven's defense makes her the best option. She played 20 minutes against Clemson. Had some ice on her knee at the end of the game. Nothing serious, I don't think. It just makes me wonder how much playing time she's get against Stanford, even if she plays well.

Haley Jones has been in a shooting slump and the competition hasn't been very stiff. She's only shooting 12% from 3. I'm guessing Brea gets the assignment in hopes of preventing Jones from muscling inside and getting shots close to the basket.
If Hannah Jump gets an open look and you hear a loud noise, that's me screaming at the TV. We just can't leave her alone. Ever. Normally, Zia gets the assignment against the opposing teams 3 point shooter. She has the ability to fight through screens. LA played some 2 guard against Clemson, so maybe the plan is to use her size against Jump. I'm sure the coaching staff has a plan. **fingers crossed**
A week ago I would have picked Stanford to win the game, tbh. I feel a bit better now with the way Zia and Brea are playing. The interior is probably going to be a wash, so the perimeter players may decide this game. Go Cocks!
I may be way off base but I think Rivers left at least partially due to number 22. She wore that number in high school and now at NC State. Last year she wore number 44 for us. Just a theory.Watching NC State - UConn and find it interesting that Wes Moore is basically utilizing Rivers exactly like we did. She is running the point when Johnson doesn’t have the ball. Didn’t she say her reason for leaving was bc she didn’t like how she was utilized here?![]()
I’m sure it was multiple things. I really think she just wanted more playing time but she would have gotten that here this year. Oh well I hate we lost her but it would be an even more crowded bench.I may be way off base but I think Rivers left at least partially due to number 22. She wore that number in high school and now at NC State. Last year she wore number 44 for us. Just a theory.
Boy, that would be superficial, wouldn't it?I may be way off base but I think Rivers left at least partially due to number 22. She wore that number in high school and now at NC State. Last year she wore number 44 for us. Just a theory.
