I was a fan of Micah's and wanted him to stay. I also thought Rhoades was a nice hire, but so far ... eh. That said, that crew of kids that Micah had put together that would have been our future at PSU isn't looking so hot right now. His son is OK, but Carey Booth is bouncing around and not doing much, Njie hasn't developed much and Imes is much of nothing so far. It does look like he's bringing in a nice class for next year, though.

Regardless, it's going to be ... uh, interesting this offseason. Tons of kids moving on, and we don't even know which guys who could stick around will choose to do so. And it could be hard to convince replacements to transfer in, since we've sputtered with what we do have.

I'm an optimist about PSU sports, but I'm pretty much at the end of my hoops rope.
I would have worried more about next year pre-portal era. But Mingo, Dillione, and Konan give us a nice start, and we’ll need to work the portal for another impact guy and more depth. Goodman should make a big improvement if he sticks around…I had high hopes for Stewart, and Carter to a degree, but they’ve really taken a back seat as of late.

Wonder what the team would look like right now if Rice had not been lost for the season, Goodman was healthy all year, Puff had not been lost, and Ace never had a back injury…

I was never expecting much from Goodman…and wasn’t sure where Rice would fit in. But a healthy Ace and Puff is a game changer.

ESPN released their first NCAA Tournament Bubble Watch article today ($$$ article, though ESPN+ is a steal). They included us in the "Work to Do" category, and put us at a 38% chance of getting a bid. Unfortunately, I'd love to make a max bet on the "under 38%" there. The write-up said...

Penn State Nittany Lions (38%)

Penn State and Nebraska are in very similar situations on the bubble, with nearly identical records overall and in the conference. The Huskers have played a tougher schedule (36th versus 66th) and therefore have the better ranking in SOR (48th versus 72nd). But the Nittany Lions also play the easier schedule going forward (53rd versus 43rd), which feeds into PSU's nearly 40% tourney odds. Still, based on how they've played recently, no one should hold their breath about Penn State's chances. (Updated Feb. 3 at 4:29 p.m.)
Next game: Tuesday vs. Minnesota, 7 p.m. (BTN)

ACE at 40%
Puff - Out
Konan - Out

I wouldn't give them 10% chance. I wouldn't give them a 38% chance to make the BiG tournament.

Tonight was the team I was worried we’d see this season with a gaping hole at the 5. Just showed how important Konan is to us at both ends…guys getting beat off the dribble the whole second half and the help led to wide open shots and so many offensive rebounds. Our shooting didn’t help…so many uncontested looks from 3 that we couldn’t make (then again, Minnesota did that most of the first half).

Who is to say guys like Dilione and Niederhauser will stick around? It's probably more likely they bounce than we retain them and we bring in enough necessary talent to supplement them via the portal. As for Goodman ... again, just a youngster, and missed much of the year after a serious injury, so I give him lots of leeway ... it's just that he's looked SO outclassed when he's out there that it's hard to project him as a contributor going forward. It's obviously possible, but I'm not counting on it at this time. It's one thing if it's a situation where you see flashes, but he's just not consistent due to a current limitation or two ... but, here, he's looked like a (really tall) middle schooler going up against NBA All-Stars most of the time.

Just really bad basketball….at one point PSU had turnovers on four straight trips down the court. I’m done….i can’t watch them anymore.

This is embarrassing. Turnovers, getting killed inside. Went from 12-2 to the worst team in the conference.

Taking a page out of PSU WBB - turnovers…careless, don’t value the ball, once promising season given away. For the talent on the team, really under achieving…how much of this is mental?

Are there any masochists staying up to watch MBB @ USC?

Good news is Konan's back. Bad news is he's on the bench with 2 early fouls.

Down double digits early.

Down 31-14 early. Too many turnovers. It's a layup drill for USC who is shooting 75%.

Embarrassing!

Just flipped over to see.
14 points at the 7:20 mark. Yikes.
masochist

Things were much better when Puff was starting and Kern was coming off the bench. Kern is incredibly athletic but it's like an intramural game when he's in the game. Fast up and down the floor, wild shots, lots of turnovers, and not much defense.

A couple of pet peeves:

Constantly double teaming going for steals. Opponents reverse the ball and get a wide open 3. Agbo is 5-7 with no hand in his face.

Opponent is inbounding the ball with less than 5 seconds to shoot and is able to run a man off a screen for a layup.

Very weak on fundamentals and discipline.

See for yourself…

Dude needs to revise his system. He may have forgotten to carry a 1 somewhere. Everyone and their mama can see this team would have struggled mightily against all but the bottom of the bottom over this stretch. It's brutal.

They all need to fake a broken arm like Rodney in Caddyshack and just walk away from this season.

Last year's team was 9-11 in conference play and they had all key players returning except Wahab who was replaced by Konan. This team is 3-11. The discipline seems to be gone.

25 point loss at unranked USC tonight.

24 point loss at unranked UCLA before that.

8 point loss to unranked Minny before that.

19 point loss to unranked OSU before that.

At this point someone just put PSU basketball out of its misery.
