Dude needs to revise his system. He may have forgotten to carry a 1 somewhere. Everyone and their mama can see this team would have struggled mightily against all but the bottom of the bottom over this stretch. It's brutal.
“Everyone and their momma” probably then lacks the perspective that we’re playing teams night in and night out in the Big Ten that are top quartile (or at the very top of Q2). It’s an unforgiving position as we’re struggling and dealing with the injuries.

“Dude” and Vegas will both have us as a few point favorite over Washington in our next game. That doesn’t happen if we’re a Q4 team.

Last year's team was 9-11 in conference play and they had all key players returning except Wahab who was replaced by Konan. This team is 3-11. The discipline seems to be gone.
Remember that we still had Clary carting a lot of the load for 2/3s of the season. We had 11 guys play 20 games, and 5 of them returned with 6 leaving…and that included a healthy Ace and Puff. Those two get hurt last season and it likely looks just as bad.

Thought that Ace had more burst then he’s had as of late for the first 5-6 minutes, but didn’t get much help and it got away.

Needed more out of Konan, but just couldn’t get into any rhythm without fouling.

Hope that Stewart is earning some more minutes. He’s shown some flashes (then again, he did in November too but was ultimately buried on the bench for much of the year).

Are there any masochists staying up to watch MBB @ USC?

Good news is Konan's back. Bad news is he's on the bench with 3 early fouls.

Down 31-14 early. Too many turnovers. It's a layup drill for USC who is shooting 75%.

Embarrassing!

masochist

Things were much better when Puff was starting and Kern was coming off the bench. Kern is incredibly athletic but it's like an intramural game when he's in the game. Fast up and down the floor, wild shots, lots of turnovers, and not much defense.
It was a quick flip back to what I was watching. 🤣🤣

I watched it, just like I do about every game so maybe I am a masochist. They lost this game in the stretch between the 12 minute timeout in the eight minute timeout in the first half. Taking bad shots, bad defense, and turning the ball over, The trifecta.
Konan getting those quick fouls didn’t help at all, but there’s just no real offensive threat with ace not being 100%. This was similar to last year, but last year they played much better defense. This year their rotations are slow and it seems like now without puff that they’re really being taken advantage of in the backside of the rotations.

I’ve been thinking for the last month and a half that Carter should’ve been getting in and getting more time but he looked terrible in his first minutes last night so maybe that’s part of the problem, the freshman just aren’t developing.

I thought that Carter showed something early this season, but he's looked overmatched the last two months. I still think there is hope for him, but Mingo seems is hopefully a "like-for-like" upgrade to him next season. Stewart shows me some potential, and Goodman needs a full season of S&C. I could see us moving on from Ward as soon as this offseason.

Yeah, like I said in the previous post, I thought at the beginning of the year he looked like he would be a solid backup point guard and even give us a chance to go with both him and Ace on the floor at the same time. He looked solid with the ball, could make outside shots and could play defense but the last couple times he’s been on the floor. He looks like he doesn’t even belong in division three.
Obviously, you can’t complain about Goodman with his injury, and Stewart has been OK though I’m not sure he can step into the starting lineup and do much without some serious work over the next eight months.
Going to need for Mingo to be the real deal and to get two wings from the portal, specifically one who can shoot. Hicks has never been a good defensive player and could make three-point shots against smaller teams that had to double down on Konan, but he’s not able to make nearly the percentage in conference.

Ah, so bad analysis explains away and perpetuates bad analysis. Circular logic for the win. Convenient.

Vegas = easy money wrt PSU

So we're going to be a favorite against another handicapable team, and that proves we're above Q4? A home showdown v. Miss Valley St would be a nailbiter, at this point. A bit of an exaggeration, but not much.

Last year the team struggled early but improved as the year went on. They finished 9-11 in conference play. This year with almost everybody back they're 3-11.

I’d like to see them try some 1-3-1 half court defense. Kern running the baseline, Ace up top. Could be a useful switch up for a few possessions.

Kern is so frustrating. He's the most athletic player on the roster but he forces things which results in wild shots and turnovers. To make matters worse he's a poor shooter. Misses FTs and defenses collapse daring him to shoot.

13 pt lead is now a 2 pt deficit against a 3-10 team at home.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Lots of issues today...
  • If they're really going to show Kern so little respect as to play 15 feet off of him, I'm telling him to take a few of those wide open 3s. The last thing I want to do there is have him drive those 15 feet right into that defender.
  • I'm stumped as to how we don't use a timeout that last possession. Even if we're going to go quickly to see if we can get something in transition, once you see that they've taken that away, call timeout and set something up with 10 seconds left.
  • The way that the season has played out, it's inexcusable to play Stewart 4 minutes, Carter 0 minutes, and Goodman 0 minutes. Ace and his bad back went all 40...he had a lot more energy today and looked better, but ran out of gas a bit at the end. I'm not playing a healthy Ace (or anyone) 40 minutes.
  • Such poor recognition as of late of who the other team's shooters are...time and again, they are getting good looks for the guys they want shooting. We did a good job on Harris today, but Mason got way too many wide open looks.

Seems to point to a coaching problem. Perhaps a team that has shot 33% from 3 for the season shooting 48% today is simply bad luck. But it's been a trend, reminiscent of Chambers' teams.

Had concerns from the start that Rhoades' defensive approach would work in the B10. Caught some teams by surprise last season but most coaches have adjusted. Even Smart and Wade had to scale back Havoc when they moved on to power conferences from VCU. Going zone is partial recognition but it leads to wide open 3s, at least for this team.

Sure the injuries have taken a toll but problems were brewing starting with the first Rutgers game. Rhoades will have to seriously think about his defensive approach for next season.

Maybe Kraft has to seriously think about Rhoades.

Ace is finally getting healthier. Best half of defensive intensity we’ve seen in a while, and offense really looking to get downhill and play inside out.

I’m convinced that Mike Rhoades might lead the country in % of games where he doesn’t call a timeout in the first half. Pretty much every other coach in the country calls the use it or lose it TO on that last possession…and it happens often. I’m not convinced that it’s good or bad, but he’s definitely got a different philosophy there.
