I'm not a freestyle ref, and don't know what the rules are for the situation about which you're asking. And unlike college (I'm not a college ref, but I know the rules really well, and also am friends with several college refs that I can check with if I'm unsure of a call), I only know one freestyle ref. I've talked with him at folkstyle meets we both reffed at, as well as at training sessions for folkstyle refs, but I'm not friendly enough with him that I have ever texted him or e-mailed him, so it's not easy for me to get the insights of a ref that knows the freestyle rules.

It appears that Yianni and his coach were discussing whether to throw a challenge brick. In college, there are challenge bricks, and we've seen situations in college where a wrestler has a quick conversation with their coach about throwing a brick.

In high school (which I ref), there are no challenge bricks. So I rarely encounter a situation where after a stoppage a wrestler is just sitting there discussing things with their coach, and making no effort to return to the center for the restart. In high school, if faced with a situation like that, the ref should signal for stalling, which is either a warning or a point (if a prior stall warning was issued).
Thanks Tom!

Hey Tom, would you please reply to my questions regarding this sequence in the match?

  1. Do you think the referee gave YD too much courtesy time?
  2. Have you ever had something like this delay ever happen in the matches you refereed? If yes, do you give a warning, a point deduction? What is the penalty for a deliberate non injury delay?
  3. Thanks! :)

In freestyle there's no injury time and you can drop to knee and ask for injury whenever you want. It's BS and I hate it foreign guys do it all the time. The situation where Yianni and Mike were discussing if they should throw the brick the ref messed that up . You give them a few seconds but not 15. We only have a few refs in the states that are worthy internationally. Overseas that situation wouldn't have gone on as long as it did

Vito was gassed a minute into the 2nd period, looks like his weight or just a lack of preparation, over in 2 unless it was just vito over exhausting himself.

Jax 4-3 with a very late takedown (0:06). Jax definitely gassed Vito. Given how exhausted Vito looked at the end of the match it will be interesting to see if Vito can compete strong for a full six minutes of match two, and three if needed. I'm definitely no SlipperyPete, but as far as how the scoring went, Vito with the first TD and then Vito got in on another good shot. There was an extended scramble with Jax getting the two. End of first period 2-2. About 45 seconds into the second Vito hit another nice shot which was countered by Jax, but Vito did get the step out point to make it 3-2. Both kept active with shots for the next two minutes or so, with Vito looking very tired. With about 30 seconds left Vito is warned for not engaging. Vito immediately shoots on the whistle resulting in a 13 second scramble where Jax breaks free and almost catches Vito's leg. Vito sprawls to his knees but makes the grave mistake of staying on his knees. Jax is able to spin behind, getting the very late TD. Restart at 0:05. Vito can barely walk back to center and doesn't even attempt a shot in those last five seconds.

Thanks Palmguy, at least post the score if you're going to comment on the match. Why is Pete being so Slippery?

Vito does not look good enough. Maybe Jax is just that much better now. Unless there's something seriously wrong with Vito.

Surprised no one has posted about it, but Jax Forrest beat Vito Arujau in match one, 4-3, taking place in Fargo.

In the second match Forrest dominated, opening with a quick TD + 2. After the break, Forrest got a step out to go up 5-0. Vito finally got a takedown but Forrest slipped the gut attempt, got his own 2, and nearly got a pin, with less than 10 seconds remaining. Forrest wins, 7-2, is on the world team.

It is amazing to have two high school wrestlers in Jax and PJ as our World Team representatives along with high schooler Marcus Blaze being a National team member. And to think Jax has the possibility of making two World teams while in HS! This current crop of HS wrestlers just amazes me. In honor of the late Todd Conner, it is a great time to be a U.S. wrestling fan!
