I was reminded today of why we seeing so many really good Kids coming up thru the ranks these days. Our grandson had a tourny today in Hershey. The place was full of future wrestlers and it was a beautiful August day, August! And these kids are battling it out in the Farm Show building. This is why Pa is so dominate. I saw names like Ciasulli & Labriola. Sorry if i messed spelling up.
Hey I was there on Saturday. Small world. My grand nephew was wrestling in the K-8 division. How did your grandson do?

He was in the novice division and went 3-2. The kid that won it was DQ because he was a PJW champ. I guess a parent ratted him out. I don't get parents who are so into making sure little Johnny dominates lesser competition. Its novice for a reason, so these kids get match time and not pinned in 30 seconds.
Funny story, the grandson has a couple hogs to show at the fair next week. He has to get weight on both before the showing. He was able to the weight on both and I asked him what he did. He said if I put chocolate syrup on anything they will eat it. So, eggs with chocolate syrup in the mornings. How did the grand nephew fare.

Not a chance. Russia/USSR has always prioritized having athletes serve as state propaganda.
Putin has a 300,000+ military draft right now, the Russian wrestlers have an incentive not to lose. The bench warmers may just end up in Ukraine.

butting into the conversation here. my son was in the 6U open and 7U novice on sunday and went 0-4 (only one first period pin, the rest went the distance). i didn't do him any favors by taking him to bananaball in baltimore saturday night and not finding him a real coach for his corner. it's crazy how good some of these youngsters are but i think my son forgave me after an afternoon of rollercoasters and chocolate.

LOL the chocolate syrup. Good job on his going 3-2. My grand nephew went 2-3 but I was impressed with what I saw from him. I've got September-December to get him ready for his freshman year of high school and still have a number of things to work on.

Luckily the Farm Show is only 10 min max from me. For the little guys its about have some fun and get them back for another year to take more steps forward. The girls freestyle was impressive. They really competed hard. I am not familiar with the outfit that put this on but man were they taking their lumps over the parking fee and $20 admission fee.

I mentioned to my son that you don't want him winning these at his age. There is so much to learn and he's having a blast. The serious stuff will come soon enough.

I think you guys were at the Chocolate Town Nationals, which were held on 8/2 - 8/3, at the PA Farm Show Complex.

If I'm correct, Break The Chains Wrestling organized the event.

I ref a lot of youth tournaments, but not too many during the "offseason." (There is no offseason, but to me anything outside of the start to finish of the HS schedule is the offseason.) Refs don't have to pay an entrance fee, or a parking fee (that I've ever encountered). I often see the kids/parents/grandparents in line to enter/pay the entrance and/or parking fee, and am surprised that the organizers can get away with what they charge (in addition to the registration fee for the wrestlers). I've asked a couple of the event organizers about the fees, and they indicated it's a combination of what the facility charges them, the amount they pay the refs, the expense of the trophies, and in the case where wrestling clubs are running the event, there may also be a component that is for making some profit for the club.

I'm the same way. I told my nephew everything from now till his first high school match the first weekend of december is all concentrating on learning not winning. I take a notebook with me and my concentration is on scouting him more than coaching him. Starting september when we can finally get back into our mat room my concentration is on teaching and his on learning.

The girls soccer tournaments we attend are no different. Although I'd bet less money overall. We pay for her to play plus for us to watch. Schools use them as fundraisers to help fund their high school season.

interesting. I attend a lot of soccer tournaments. For outdoor, I've seen a few charge for parking, but never encountered one that charged for admittance. For indoor, I've seen some charge for attendance; can't recall if they also charged for parking.

I have never been charged for parking. Indoor or outdoor tournaments. Most charge $5 a person for attendance, so its nothing significant. Usually the player fee is $20 to 30, depending on how many girls sign up. So I'd bet its a flat fee to enter divided by girls attending.

Never been charged for parking either, although some of the parking I did cost me plenty...

posting again on this thread because i didn't see a "brag about your wrestling offspring" thread. i didn't want my son's summer wrestling to end like that so i took him to a "war zone" up in easton this past weekend. it was our first time doing one of these events but it's pretty much just 2 hours of as many matches as you want to wrestle. you show up based on weight and you just click a button in an app to say you're ready for a match and it tells you where to go. he ended up wrestling 10 matches in those 2 hours which got him a gold medal, because the medals are awarded based on number of matches and not wins and losses. some of the matches weren't close skill-wise, which was sort of expected given the limited number of kids there in the offseason, but getting thrown in against some higher level kids definitely made us more aware of the areas to work on. he was able to finish the summer with a win and he's looking forward to october for some preseason tournaments.

anyway, mods feel free to move or delete this if you want to keep this thread clean. just wanted to share my experience with a new event format.

Wow, I love that format. I wish they had that a few years ago when I was still taking my son to tournaments. You could likely get in and out in some decent amount of time and still get 4-6 matches. My guy was heavy so sometimes we would wait all day for 3 matches, and be the last ones out of the gym.

Format seems cool. Is there any "waiting period" before you can request another match?

no waiting period. you can request another as soon as your last score gets loaded to whatever program, which was usually within 30 seconds of the match ending. the longest time we waited was maybe 10 minutes before i realized i could put in a note that we're ok with rematches. it seemed like he had wrestled all the kids in his age/weight/skill range and wouldn't force a rematch unless both parties were cool with it.

This is a really cool setup. I sent this to a few parents. I get the comment about being in a gym for hours and only getting a few matches.
