I do like to dress well, but the grey shirt and magenta are too look at me for a wedding. A gala may be different. I will wear a white shirt with cuff links and a subtle gray tie. No square

Fair enough. But try to wear funky socks. It will be just your little secret. ;)

To be more precise, my wife is invited and I’m her and one…
I understand.
🤔 I sort of also understand. 🤥

What Is Black Tie Optional? Dress Code Guide For Men & The Best Garments To Wear

In this article, we’ll be discussing the most generous of all dress codes: black tie optional. We’ll address what you can wear and offer other helpful tips for your attire including:
If you’ve found yourself here in error or need information on a different dress code, take a quick look at our dress code guide.
Not every man owns a tuxedo. In fact, relatively few do. Furthermore, dinner jackets can be quite expensive, especially if you go the made-to-measure or bespoke route. Black tie-optional offers such men the opportunity to attend semi-formal evening events without having to shell out a ton of money for new clothes. How thoughtful!

I would never willingly go somewhere that a tuxedo would be expected.
I’ve been on several high end cruise lines where they have formal nights. I always wear a tux and pack several formal shirts for the trip, and a few different bow tie and cummerbund or vest combinations. I even have one with the Penn State chipmunks logo pattern. My wife will usually dress in a floor length gown for those evenings. It’s something we enjoy as we don’t get to do it at home. Everyone looks great. The nice jewelry is on display, the champagne flows, the caviar is served and the whole scene aboard is glamorous. Clothing is a big part of the experience. Enjoy it and be comfortable rather than intimidated by it.

Wear black shoes, white shirt and a dark, not flashy tie with your dark grey suit and you will be good to go. The whole point is to not stand out. It's the bride and groom's day so all the attention will be on them. Unless you are dressed really flashy or really shabby no one will be paying attention to what you wear.
This. Wear your suit with a darker tie and you’re all set. We had this same sort wedding a couple of years ago. I wore my charcoal suit with subdued tie. Several other men were wearing the same.

I saw that one. Didn’t end well.

^ Personally, the thought of needing to pack a tux for a cruise is 🤮.
I suggest you stay on the Disney or Carnival cruise lines. You’ll be more comfortable there. Seabourn, Silverseas, Regent, all provide a higher level of accommodations and service, complete with personal butlers, and cater to a more affluent customer base who expect and enjoy these formalities (and lack of children onboard). It’s very expensive but if you can afford it, it’s worth it IMHO.

Not a fan of formal nights on cruises - I like dressing up but not when on vacation (especially on a cruise where you want to keep packing fairly light). My FIL loves it though for the reasons you state.

Having to wear a tux on a cruise is not worth it, even though can easily afford it.

I prefer a tropical destination villa anyways over cruises.

Basically a pond would be good for him.
Nah. More like private pool.

Exactly. I get to wear a suit or dress slacks and dress jacket quite often for work. Why the f do I want to do that to even more of a degree on vacation? I don’t.

And Nitwit, I’m not criticizing you for liking to dress up on cruises to tux level since you and your lady enjoy it.

Rather, I am saying that I have no desire to do so.

that just makes it easier to spot the losers
So I am a loser because I don’t own a tuxedo? Certainly you don’t suggest that wearing rented clothing makes one a winner… Your take sounds so much like a superficial manhood contest. I’m pretty secure in who I am, thanks anyway.

I have a wedding to attend this spring that may end up being black tie optional. I hate the idea that people would be so prescriptive, but don’t want to stand out by being underdressed or ruin a brides big day. I absolutely am opposed to renting clothes for someone else’s wedding. I didn’t even do that for my own wedding. I have a nice suit that I just bought a couple of months ago. The only problem is that the suit is gray. Reading on line, I’ve seen that black or blue suits with solid dark ties are acceptable at black tie optional events. For those of you in tune with fashion or etiquette (thinking of you @Midnighter), do you think I could pull off the gray suit without offending?

I do have a decent black suit, but it’s really big on me since I’ve lost 40 LBs. Wearing the oversized black suit is an option as well. I would certainly fit the dress code, just look a little more shabby with the I’ll fitting suit.
If you have a tux, wear it. If not, a dark suit with dark tie. Better yet, gray suit with a black tie and white shirt. I've been to a number of Black Tie optional events. The worst thing you can do is wear a tan suit, or some other summer color suit, or a sport coat and some stupid looking pants. People look like dummies when not dressed properly and it's disrespectful to the event you've been invited too.

I was in the same situation once. I had a black suit, so I went to a tux shop and bought a really nice vest, tie, pocket handkerchief to go with it and rented a pair of black/white spatz shoes. Worked out great.

Disney is a premiere cruise line - it just happens to cater to families. That said, the last Disney cruise I took I saw Pappy Van Winkle bourbon and Louis XIII cognac behind the bar. A personal butler seems a bit much for a cruise but I’m interested….

Sure you are- which is why you're asking a bunch of knuckleheads on a football chat board what you should wear.

I feel sorry for your mother… insulting people on message boards. That tuxedo in your closet sure does make you a winner though. SMH

It’s not about “having to wear it” it’s about “wanting” to wear it. And about being in an environment with others similarly inclined. Some of us enjoy the glamour of evening attire. I can wear a nice suit every day to work, but the tux and evening gown for the wife is for special occasions which we will remember long after the cruise ends. It’s like being on the Red Carpet for the Oscars. BTW most of my cruises are European destinations but with the war in Ukraine and Covid I’m grounded. I haven’t taken one now for 2 years and not going anywhere abroad soon. It sucks.

This board needs an enema.

Way too much vitriol lately. This was a pretty simple question from a well known poster. Have a little fun, there's no need to get mean or anal retentive. In the words of the great Sgt. Hulka:

Maybe learn to read the room. 🤷‍♂️ There has been no meanness or vitriol in this thread.

There's a lot of fun and good info, which is the way it should be. There's also too many posts that go way overboard.
