I don’t want to ever go anywhere that a tuxedo is appropriate. I will never wear one, so buying one don’t make any sense.
Clearly, you should sit this one out then, because "optional" means it is expected and "appropriate" -- as many have said already.

OMFG! I know that I should just ignore these types of comments, but you are wrong. Otional doesn't mean wear whatever you want, it means wear something close. Please educate yourself before trying to correct me.

Very, very impressed that you can fit into a suit from over 30 years ago. Personally I have 30 and 40 year old Ties that still fit!
As for wearing a grey suit to a black tie optional event, don't sweat it. As long as you are not in the wedding party or a lot of pictures, I wouldn't worry. Wear your grey suit. In the slight chance you feel out of place, drink heavily. The bride has a lot more to worry about than the color of your suit.
Side note - I own two Tuxedos. Neither one fits. Now I rent. I wear my own shoes.
@Got GSPs can wear one of the two of yours that don't fit. Problem solved.

I have a wedding to attend this spring that may end up being black tie optional. I hate the idea that people would be so prescriptive, but don’t want to stand out by being underdressed or ruin a brides big day. I absolutely am opposed to renting clothes for someone else’s wedding. I didn’t even do that for my own wedding. I have a nice suit that I just bought a couple of months ago. The only problem is that the suit is gray. Reading on line, I’ve seen that black or blue suits with solid dark ties are acceptable at black tie optional events. For those of you in tune with fashion or etiquette (thinking of you @Midnighter), do you think I could pull off the gray suit without offending?

I do have a decent black suit, but it’s really big on me since I’ve lost 40 LBs. Wearing the oversized black suit is an option as well. I would certainly fit the dress code, just look a little more shabby with the I’ll fitting suit.
Buy a Tux. It's cheaper than you think.

One of several online options.

Maybe I'll start a gofundme so that all of you on the board can chip in to buy me a tuxedo. I'm a big and tall guy and at Jos A Bank, the suit separates are $299. It looks like tuxedos are $429... I can't promise to look this good, but will wear a tuxedo if the McAndrew board buys me one.

Get the black suit altered, wear a gray dress shirt and black tie. If you can, get a black vest and wear suspenders Under the vest. Not a belt. Throw in a splash of color with a pocket square. Magenta works for me. But choose a color that works for you.
And wear black shoes, not brown And a nice watch.

Your wife will thank the board for this advice.

Congrats on the weight loss.
If you get that suit altered have them add buttons for braces. Smoother look then suspenders.

If a hundred of you put in $5 each, or 25 of you put in $20 each...

I swear I'll buy one. I'll even wear it to a Penn State sporting event sometime!
Okay, you cyber twisted my arm. I upped my commitment to $25.00! Let's make this happen! This could be an On3 first?

I am serious. Where's an auctioneer when you need one. Do we have 19 more? For the price of four or five latte's we can fund a Tux.

I don’t believe anyone in this thread has asked what your wife is wearing.

It would be really bad form on your part to “out-dress” her.

I don’t even own a suit any more so I can’t really give any useful advice on what to wear. However, I have learned over the past few days that when attending a black tie event, the proper thing to do is to find the smallest man at the event and slap him in the face.

Whelp, the invitation came today and it is not black tie optional. LOL

I had already bought a silk black neck tie and a white pocket square so I’m going to rock the ”optional” look.

If this is an April Fool’s joke I swear I am going to hunt you down and hurt you.
No April fools, the wedding invitations don’t have any indication of dress code. I don’t know where my wife got the whole black tie optional

Are you sure your wife didn't care what you wore? That is an amazing coincidence on timing.

My wife cares that my clothes are clean and servicable. She doesn’t care much about fashion though and had zero idea what the optional in black tie optional meant. She would not have approved of my buying a tuxedo that I’d never wear again. She works with the bride and maybe the bride wanted black tie optional but was talked out of it.

And the plot thickens... even though the invitations said nothing of the attire, my wife is told that their "website" indicates black tie optional. I'm wearing my very nic and well fitting dark gray suit, black shoes/socks/belt, white shirt, black silk necktie, and white pocket square. I spring for the new tie and pocket square. I think it puts me into the "optional" neighborhood. I'm sure there will be some family member there with a polo shirt and kakhis.

Per GQ:

What You Should Wear: The same suit-and-tie rig you'd wear to an important meeting at the office this time of year. And just like your 9–5 kits, a gray or navy suit is going to be your best bet here. Pair it with a proper dress shirt (no button-down collars, please) and solid or subtle patterned tie to keep things on the dressier side. You can wear a tux if you're so inclined but, as the dress code says, it really is optional.

Yes, thank you. That was the original info I found upon my research. I was just overthinking about whether my dark grey suit was dark gray enough.
