Heading west to see the wife-side part of my family. We’ll visit Fallingwater and then press on to Pittsburgh. We’re looking at spending a day and a half in town, two nights, Carnegie Museum of Art is a must.

Any suggestions for a hotel, or a good neighborhood to grab dinner? Any restaurant recommendations?

The Pirates will be in town. Just saying, not going to a game.
Leave time to visit Kentucky Knob which is not far from Fallingwater.

The Roberto Clemente Museum is a must if you're a Pirates fan, and terrific if you're a baseball fan at all. I'm an Orioles fan and I really enjoyed it, even though it seemed as though every 3rd photo or exhibit was related to the '71 World Series.
The Museum has odd hours, so you have to go online to find when tours are given. It's off the beaten path a bit, too, but not all that far from "dahntahn".

The Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset isn't far from Fallingwater if you're driving east to west. Both are a bit of an adventure off main roads to get to, so GPS was a big help for me.

PNC Park is fantastic, Pirates fan or not.
If decide to visit F93M, great place to stop is Jean Benet on Route 30. Great food and atmosphere.

We were planning on doing both the same day but this was before we decided to visit Pittsburgh. We typically overnight in Columbus.

We saw Kentuck Knob last year, Fallingwater four years ago, if memory serves. So Fallingwater won this year.

Get a Steak and French Fry Salad with your Beer! ( and don’t forget the pierogis )

The low key best, most pervasive food culture in Western PA is flavored wings. Almost every bar anywhere has them, and not just hot, medium, mild, or buffalo - like, 30+ flavors. And they've been good at it a long time. This isn't as much of a thing in Allegheny County/Pittsburgh, but man, go to Kendrew's in Aliquippa, Zooky's in New Brighton, or Wings, Suds and Spuds in Moon. Quaker Steak and Lube used to get all the national headlines (Sharon, PA) but I think the Beaver County sports/dive bar wing scene is better. All these places have salads with fries/steak too :).

Many discos, museums and places that reduce overall Pitt football attendance. It is what it is.

A great place, but, sadly, has been closed for many years. It closed when Joe Chiodo retired and then the building was torn down. Joe ran it for nearly 60 years.
I worked at Kennywood during HS and college, and a gang of us would go there after the park closed some nights.

Great food and great memories. Was really bummed when it closed!

As I recall, Joe was a World War 2 vet who bought the place when he returned home and ran it as a labor of love. He made a good living, but he just loved what he did, and his tavern became iconic in a way that Primanti's never could. If your food is great you don't need a gimmick to sell it.
Was this chiodo from Baldwin?

It's my recollection that he came to America from Italy with his family when he was 9 and his dad, a cobbler, settled in Homestead. I think that after Joe got married he moved to Baldwin, which is not that far away.

Photo of Joe in his tavern.

I enjoy Pittsburgh, but it has been about six years since I have been there.

My must sees -

Carnegie Museum and Frick Art Museum. One huge complex located between Pitt and CMU. Great collection of dinosaur bones, art, jewels and history. A geek can get lost there. The Carnegie Library is also there.

Mt Washington. Take the tram car up the hill and take in the best views of the City. Incredible on a beautiful day. There are a couple restaurants up there that might be worth a lunch or dinner with the view. Fantastic views of Point Park.

North Side. The football and baseball parks are there and not far away you have the Aviary which is good for a visit. This part of town also has some of the oldest areas remaining in the City, some dating back to the early 19th century.

Schenley Park. My wife and I spent many hours here. Get a picnic lunch and rest your legs after visiting the museums. It is just a short walk and tucked in behind the CMU campus. One of the nicest urban parks I have been to.

Pittsburgh has a ton of great watering holes with decent food. You quickly learn Pittsburgh is really a conglomeration of many small towns and neighborhoods, separated by hills, highways and rivers.

Any hotel suggestions? North Oakland? Downtown? I’m more interested in location than specific hotels. TIA.

I don't know who Big Pete is, so I can't say.
Big Pete was a witness against a mob boss ( John Gotti?). I can’t remember the time line before after the trial he was shot like 40 times and survived. He was like 6’8 and 400#. They put him in witsac down here in Huntington wv. Let’s just say he and his Italian buddies stood out. I mean who goes out in 3 piece suits in WV?? They called him Joey here. He went to a lawyer friend of mine to help w business licenses. He got one and basically they were bringing garbage down from NY and putting it in old strip mines. lol

Oakland. Cathedral of Yearning. Pinnacle of Ignorance.

FYP. But seriously, the Nationality Rooms are really cool. If you are into wildlife, the Zoo and the National Aviary are both good--and I concur about Pamala's, though it has been some time.

If you’re looking for an urban B&B experience, this place is pretty fantastic.

As someone born and raised in a suburb of Pittsburgh my recommendation is just go somewhere else.
