Yeah, it was straight up. Washington lived off that mistake for years.

Just by looking at the picture, first row is Plum, Tarkenton, Meredith, John Brodie, Sonny, YA.

Second row is Starr, Unitas, Snead, all I could get. The Browns quarterback’s name is on the tip of my tongue.

What was this board like in ‘61 with Layne as the Stillers’ QB?

Unitas was an interception machine in ‘61. 24 picks.

Washington was 1-12-1 in ‘61. WTF?

A friend of mine told me this story which I have posted on tMcAb at least twice already. He’s watching NYG-Washington at RFK and looks down for a moment. When he turns back to the game he sees what he thinks has to be a punt. “Why the hell are they punting on second down?” It was YA showing off his arm.

I once asked my dad who had the strongest arm he’d seen (this was about 1995). “Van Brocklin.” “Really?” “Yeah, Van Brocklin. No question in my mind.” fWIW.

Thanks for posting. Most of these QBs had their best years before my time, but I remember some of them as broadcasters or during the very end of their careers. Also, I can't get over how old these guys looked for their age. Some of these guys were still in their 20s and look to be in their 40's.

The guys I knew from the picture: Starr, Unitas, Tarkenton, Meredith, Brodie, Tittle

I made an interesting mistake. The Detroit QB (far left first row) is Jim Ninowski. I had guessed that it was Plum, who is the Cleveland QB in this picture.

speaking of 1961 I just learned this.......
3. Imagine what it was like being an Eagles fan in the 1960s and 1970s? After the 1960 team won the NFL Championship and the 1961 team went 10-4, the Eagles proceeded to go 73-142-9 during the 16-year span from 1962 through 1977. No other team lost more than 130 games during that span. Think about that for a second. Over a decade and a half, the Eagles averaged 4½ wins per year. They had one winning season during those 16 years -- the 1966 team somehow went 9-5 despite losses by 49, 31, 20 and 14 points. So if you became an Eagles fan in 1962 and you were 14 years old, you got to experience one winning season and no playoff appearances by the time you were 30. There have been a lot of disappointments over the last few decades, but consider this: The last 34 years, the Eagles have had seven losing seasons. The previous 34 years, they had 23 losing seasons. It's not a bad time to be an Eagles fan.

How much has the NFL changed? The best QB rating of the bunch (Billy Wade!) would have made him 15th this year (but still substantially better than both Bears QBs this year).

The top photo is Concrete Charlie sending Frank Gifford to the hospital and a 1 year retirement. Giff returned in 63 but remained strictly a wideout for the remainder of the year.
