Best fries and onion rings are hands down "the Beacon" in Spartanburg. I know it's not a chain but if you're ever in the Upstate, it's a must stop...Meat & 3 "Wade's" in Spartanburg is hands down the best.

Love, love, love the Beacon's Mayo Chilli Cheese burger a plenty.
Love, love, love Wade's Steak and Gravy and Peanut Butter Pie.

The Flounder Fish Camp a little futher up I26 at the old Waccamaw Pottery exit has the best Salmon Stew.

I don't particularly like French fries but Five Guys are terrible, as are In-N-Out. Shake Shack ain't great either. I think McDonald's fries are best by a mile, but then McD's burgers are terrible.
We went to a McD's years ago and it's within five minutes of our house. Burgers were cold. Have not been back.

Agree on Wade's and the Flounder. Try Ike's....the Beacon ain't what it used to be. Holmes Hot Dogs and Hub City Chicken and More are great also.

I went in one near DFW a few years back and it was outstanding. I went in another one in Nashville this past fall which is the first time I had visited since the founding family sold it to that conglomerate. It ain't the same. Prepare to be underwhelmed.

Any Columbia long-timers - I just had a random flashback to my youth - was there once a Whataburger on either Knox Abbott or Meeting in the mid or late 1980s?
I don't think that would have been the same as the Texas Whataburger. I believe the one to which you're referring, and there are other examples, was owned by local people who used a variant of the same name.

Whataburger has had locations in Pensacola and Ft. Walton for years. Since the 60s I believe. Their hamburgers remind me of burgers you got in the 1950’s whether at a drive in or a bowling alley.

I think the Whataburger locations that are opening in SC now are the first authentic ones around here, though. Again, something is lost almost anytime a family-managed company goes conglomerate. That's the "before and after" I observed in Nashville.

I always stop at the Clock in Greer when I'm I the upstate visiting family.
It's hard to get a table there because the food is really good.
Yes, I eat there more than anywhere else when I'm down to visit the family, being from Greer. It's by FAR the best Clock in the upstate for sure. If I'm going fine dining which we do occasionally, I will take the folks to Select Restaurant in downtown Greer. It's PRICEY!!! but very good food and Coffee....I will stop in Select and get a coffee to go as that is how good it is...

Has anyone driven up to dark corner in Blue Ridge and gotten a hot dog from O'neal's restaurant?

I like them but they are opening on Main Street in Anderson across from CVS. I have to cross that intersection frequently to get home. I guess I better find another way

I agree, the ones in Texas are better. But every thing is. You should see the Dairy Queens in Texas. They still have the old menus from before they were bought by Brazier years ago.

Yes. But I’m a Texan. It’s just a taste from childhood you always have. Not bad for a fast food burger and it’s open 24 hours.

Looking forward to it. Ranks right behind In-N-Out. First one is 1/2 mile from my house.
It'll have to do until In-N-Out makes it way over from Nashville.
Whataburger is decent... wouldn't get too amped about it.

As for In-N-Out, they make a quality burger but damn if they don't have the worst fries I've ever had in my life! Soggy, limp, not salted enough... just gross.

“The Virginia-based What-A-Burger that likely first opened in 1957 is an entirely different restaurant than the dash-less Whataburger that was founded in Corpus Christi, Texas by Herman Dobbs in 1950.”

Just had a Whataburger restaurant open near me, so I went in to try one. It was decent, but I'm not getting the rave reviews.
I thought a tad bit pricy, 2 single cheeseburgers and large Onion Rings = $17.00.
For 5 dollars more I can go into Chillies and get the 3 for me for both of us, Old Timer Burger w/fries, appetizer and a drink. Best deal out there.

Fast food prices are outrageous now. My wife and I can go to Hwy 55, eat nicely, AND leave a righteous tip and come out cheaper than at Arby's or Wendy's

That's interesting. We just recently got a Hwy 55 not far from us here in Montana and I found it to be outrageously expensive - not even in the ballpark of Wendy's and Arby's. Something must have been lost in their westward expansion.

I didn't realize they had expanded that far west. They are in eight states according to their website. Montana franchisees must be a little greedier because everyone knows y'all are rich out there. 😉

Maybe that was true at one time, but it's hard to get rich paying $13.95 for a hamburger. Unless you're the guy selling the hamburgers.

It is odd how Hwy 55 expanded. They are definitely mostly a southeastern entity, but then decided to franchises in Colorado and Montana without "growing toward" those areas. I hope it's not a case of spreading themselves too thin.

I'm paying about 11.95 for a cheese steak sandwich with choice of fries, onion rings, or tots, plus a large drink with free refills. Naturally we tip. They also accept these discount cards that school groups sell. 10% discount. Two of us, without the discount, get out for under $25. Sometimes my wife only has a sandwich and drink and we don't break $20.

Culver's is good and clean dine-in environment - kinda like the Chick-fil-A of burgers
Had the triple deluxe burger from there tonight. Ranks high on my list. The last What-A-Burger I ate at was in Mobile AL a couple of years ago. I was a little underwhelmed. Like most chains, say like a Burger King, they used to be really good.

The free-standing ones are. Those in mall food courts, not so much. The Hyy 55 at Coastal Grande at Myrtle Beach is terrible.
In addition to the premium price, I was not impressed with the fries. The burger was fine.

But I will not let my experience with the Montana Hwy 55 prejudice me against the ones in the Carolinas. I'll give them another try when I visit this summer.
