Bad Experience at Game

I have been attending PSU games at Beaver Stadium for nearly 50 years and have been a season ticket holder for probably the last 15 years. I have been in my current seats for about 10 years. Unfortunately, I had my first negative experience at a game this past Saturday.

My son attended with me and he had a class that pushed our arrival at our seats at about 3 minutes after kickoff. When we get to the row, we have to climb over 6-7 people and when I get to my seats, there's two guys in them. Right away, they started by saying that they held the tickets to the seats in front of my seats and were there with the guys in the row behind us. (BTW, I didn't recognize any of the regular season ticket holders in any of the seats around me.) They asked if I minded if I took their seats. I said no, that I wanted to stay in my seats, that they were my season tickets. I didn't get to say much more because they got salty right away and moved up and started telling their friends behind us that they were gonna "stand tall" the entire game - and they did.

The real reason I didn't want to take their seats was that the seats in front of me have seat backs and I am 60 years old and wearing multiple layers of clothes. I was not going to be able to navigate down very easily. Nor did I want to go back out over the people I just tried to get around and do the same thing the next aisle down.

The next incident occurred at the first pick 6. One of the guys (both were mid to late 30's) turned around and started to high 5 his buddy in the row behind my side - he went right over my son with an arm on each side of my son's head. It was over the line in my opinion, and probably premeditated. My son gave him a forearm to the chest and they ended up having words. The guys were all saying that they were just celebrating, blah blah blah. The guys in front appeared to have a few in them and the ones behind were attempting to calm the situation down.

I would have gladly tried to have a reasonable conversation about my decision and probably would have changed seats if it was an hour before the game, but not at that time.

Contrasting experience here. Although sympathize with the OP. Was worried about crowd size but students showed up and was a really fun, albeit cold, experience overall. SMU fans next to me were super nice and complementary. No old folks yelling about sitting down :). Ton of fun!!

Sorry that happened, for me, everyone seemed to be in good spirits. I didn't see any problems anywhere.
But I am sure there were a lot of people who don't normally attend.

I did see at least one student who needed to be wheeled out by the emts because they drank too much. (I assume)
But that is not atypical.

The worst I have seen a crowd was 2005 Ohio State. The fans were in a salty mood they entire time.

There seemed to be a lot of people in the stadium that don't normally attend home games. I think with the different atmosphere and the hype of the playoff game fans were jacked up a little more than normal and also even though it was cold, they seemed to have been pre-gaming earlier. Had several incidents where fans were just being arseholes in general which seemed a little diff then the usual home crowd. There was some douchebag sitting above the visiting team tunnel that would aggressively boo the young women on the SMU football staff every time they walked in and out of the tunnel. People were trying to climb over and under the gates they pull shut when the visiting team goes from the locker room to the field. Its just dumb. Can't people just enjoy the game without being obnoxious arseholes? Attended the Big Championship game and we had about 4 obnoxiously drunk guys behind us that towards the end made it very unpleasant. They were neither PSU or Oregon fans but midwesterners having a night out who had money on the game and were just cheering every good play that some PSU fans behind them were getting angry. Personally I didn't have a problem with them. For this reason I like watching the games from my couch but you need to expect there are going to be arseholes when you go to the games and you need to choose how you react to them. If it was me, I would have joined them in the high fives. Can't wait until the stadium reno makes it more comfortable to watch a game in Beaver Stadium. I gots long legs and get very uncomfortable by the end of the games.

I actually didn’t care about standing. I like to stand at the games, so that doesn’t bother me one bit. The regulars who sit around me are respectful and probably in our generation.

I hope this was a one-off.

I would have joined them in the high-fiving (normally do) if they weren’t trying to intimidate my son. That crossed the line. I was proud my son didn’t escalate it further.

I am surprised you haven't received the same..."Go away old man"....that is replied to me....seems our generation expects to much of other generations.
Sadly, in the culture of today's society, expecting "common courtesy" is too much to ask for... Folks, this is the "everyone gets a trophy" generation in full bloom...there is no accountability for personal behavior and this generation thinks they are entitled to everything regardless of the impact on others...it's the "I" phone generation..."I" want this, it's about "me", as long as "I" get what "I" want the hell with everyone else....

...I am the old man that has gone away simply because I am tired of almost getting run over in the cross walk while some one running a red light because they needed to be on their phone getting what they wanted for themselves....Merry Christmas...

Sorry to hear about your experience, it does happen , mine was always opposing fans.

The only plus was Penn State fans who got to see only Akron, Kent, and FCS teams
attended a real game with everything on the line.

Heard the playoff and weather brought out the Yahoos who know nothing about PSU football. More than one person said season ticket holders were not there.

Welcome to Ohio State football, where no one actually attended the school and think they are watching a NFL AFC game.

Crazy thing in eh row 4 where the…..arsehole in the aisle seat got pissed that folks needed to get by him to get to the seats past him….like it was the first time it ever happened. Once at the beginning of the game.

Otherwise all the folks there were wonderful and everybody basically stood the whole game (since it was nigh impossible for everyone to sit with the bulk of clothes that were required).

I've just had enough of people. We know that a solid majority of people in this country have poor education and reasoning skills. I don't trust them to act reasonably.

AC/DC and Metallica are both coming to Raymond James this spring, 15 minutes from my house. I'm not going anywhere near it. The little bit of heart I have left breaks, but that's life.

Get back to me after you have to do it 37 times! And we left after the 3rd quarter!

During the UCLA game a guy came and I got out in the aisle. He moseyed on in and got to a seat about7-8 from ours. His buddies were there but he did not have a ticket for this section . He wanted the people in the seats adjacent to his friends seats to make room for him so he could “ have a visit.” I thought the one guy was going to pick him up and toss him out!

You are not wrong. But who do you blame? The “kids” or those responsible for their upbringing?

I blame the parents, had to put up with all their “entitled “ crap - kids, showing up randomly, expecting to be first when they were there, self-centered play/participation, look at me attitude, need a trophy regardless of effort made or results - when I was raising my own children and trying to instill values of hard work and accepting responsibility for actions. So I was fed up with the parents, and now I’m fed up with their kids/now adults.

So, just to clarify. You’re fed up? 🤣

I get it. I have teenagers. Some of the behavior of their age groups is eye opening and the acceptance of it by their parents is even more so.

+1 on the '05 Ohio State game its the only time I've seen, sans a pitt game, people thrown out and that was before the game started.
Only other bad experience I ever had in NEU was a really drunk Iowa fan at a white out that couldn't hold his alcohol or his bladder.

The younger generations have a generational intolerance. They are acceptable and inclusive of foreign cultures, but not the culture that older people grew up in. So, they just tell us old geezers to go away.

The worst experience I ever had was 97 against scum. I had some of their Walmart wolverine fans in front of me and it was the closet I ever came to a physical altercation. They were worse than pitt fans or any of our old eastern rival fans.

I didn’t realize you were in that area. Forgive my question, but do you happen to know what condition Clearwater Beach area is in following the hurricanes? Looking to visit in Feb/March. Thanks.
