Why would anyone be offended that someone does an analysis to guide his strategies? This is a trait anyone would look for in a member of a board of trustees.

Fenchak's biggest problem is his history of over-the-top posting on this board. This was something that prevented me from voting for him in the past. As I indicated, I will overlook this and vote for him this time, but it was an issue and remains a concern. The fact that he has seemingly moderated his tone on this new board likely played a role in my change of heart, but his previous tone was a huge turnoff. From what I'm reading here, for many people it still is.

Some people are offended because it goes again their desires to spend money.

Museums have an extremely positive effect on society, in addition to the art & culture benefits. Museums preserve the legacy of humanity, chronicling both the good and the bad, and serve to enrich the lives of countless visitors like you, making the world a more enlightened place for present and future generations. But I suppose many of you don’t care about art because you don’t have an intellectual interest in art. That’s OK. I have other ideas. Maybe they should just do away with all the sports programs which lose money instead, or cut all the coaches salaries in half and just have teams with losing records, or play in the Patriot league. Think of all the tuition dollars we could save. Maybe we could quit giving tenure to professors and just hire grad assistants to teach from now on. That would really save a lot. Or let’s fire half of the bloated administrative staff and have the professors do all their own accounting, legal, HR, insurance, procurement, and building maintenance. I’m sure we’d continue to attract the top professors (and students) if we did that - but hey - at least tuition would be cheap. And we don’t even need to teach art, or French, or other useless liberal arts majors.

Maybe I should run for the Board - I have all the answers. It’s easy.
You're more extreme than Barry. I really like the Patriot League idea. I've decided. Thank you.

Museums are wonderful things, but you don't build them in the middle of nowhere where few people go to see the permanent collections or attract any major exhibitions.

“If you build it, Fats will come.”

Museum of Dreams
, coming to a theater near you, Summer 2024.
FIFY.

The original attendance projection was equal to the of the Frick.....on Fifth Avenue....in NYC...with a collection that Fats would have a wet dream over, assuming that he can still have wet dreams. It has since been revised downward.

I expect "he" would be about the last person who could be marginalized. The vast majority on the Board marginalize themselves, with precious few exceptions.

Knowing "Robert's Rules of Order" is only the small sliver of it, of course - and it really isn't that significant, but I expect you are not all that familiar with the applicabilities in this case.
In any event, with the way the Board operates, the most important impacts won't come in formal Board meetings anyway - though that is a very important part, when done properly.

No one can muzzle or restrict the open questioning, the presentation of alternatives, or the discussion of issues - all of which are vital to both accountability and proper responsible governance - not unless the "muzzle-ee" sanctions it him/herself.
Give 'em hell Barry! I think that sounds like an old presidential campaign slogan. (Truman not Obama youngins). What's old can be new again.

Obviously a misunderstanding.
Since his spinmeisters haven’t seen these posts yet, I’ll try to help….he might have been mad, and everyone knows that it’s ok for a member of the Board of Trustees to call others a “retard” if he’s mad, as long as he supports keeping tuition in check. Everything was taken out of context, and you’re a liar if you don’t defend Barry’s prior words.

Barry has devotees who defend his every word. Think about it. He's almost a cult leader. Well, there are only two or three devotees, but it's a start.

We’ve been called a cult before. A cult needs a leader. And if we’re retards, so be it. We’re talking Penn State here.

I hate us, and people who look like us.

For the past several years the university has been rebranding itself to become more accessible and inclusive. Remember the PSU “commercial” that no one seemed to like? The one which played the alma mater and showed scenes from around the state of Pa, including some inner city neighborhoods? Over the past several years PSU has hired and promoted several highly visible minority and or gay or lesbian faculty, coaches, and administrators. And most recently they selected an Indian woman to be the next university president. All of these individuals are likely excellent hires. But the point I’m trying to make is that the university has been undergoing a very deliberate and well orchestrated change for a number of years, directed by the Board, and President Barron is no longer representative of the “new Penn State”, whose goal it is to attract a much more diverse student body composed of a higher proportion of minority and international students, and of world campus students. This transition is complex, and Penn State is not alone in its attempt to accomplish what it is doing. This is in fact becoming the norm among many highly respected universities around the country. Look at other recent hires - U of Penn, Ohio State, Stonybrook, Widener, …. This is higher education in 2022 like it or not. And it’s happening in the private sector as well. It’s all about DEI now. Is this good for Penn State? Good for society? I’ll leave this open to others and avoid the politics of it. I just wanted to state what I think is the obvious.
Can a “more diverse” student body provide the tuition-based money necessary to keep the bloated “Old Main Money Machine” still turning?

Go woke….Go broke.

PSU as an academic institution is unsustainable with your prescribed business model.

Penn State already has museums that hardly anyone visits. You completely ignore costs, and even worse ignore that it is not part of the core mission of the university. You didn't even mention students as beneficiaries, yet they will pay for it with higher tuition.
I think enriching the lives of the students is the core mission of the university. If you can’t understand that, I pity you. And if our museum was an outstanding museum, it would have many more visitors, just as if our university was stronger academically, it would have more applicants. And it would be worth the higher tuition. That’s why better schools can charge more and still have a zillion more applicants. Easy Peasy. MIT turns them away in droves and charges over $53k in tuition alone. We are their safety school, easy to get into and cheap.

Since Barry was banned from the old board, you can’t search for his posts. But you can find replies to his posts.

The two examples below, where he clearly calls two posters (including me) retarded, are from https://bwi.forums.rivals.com/threads/joe-moorhead-may-be-fired-by-miss-state.257414/.

They are both “in context” and completely unacceptable.

Hey, that’s me!!!
In defense of Barry, he did put it in parantheses and include a smiley face so it may have all been in fun. 😱

Yep. Welcome to the club!

I have two adult sons on the autism spectrum, one who also has other developmental disabilities and has been called “retarded” more times than I care to remember. It’s hurtful, and no adult should ever call anyone that, ever.

I don’t know. You’d have to ask my wife. Hay Oooooo!

What’s combative about saying a grown man shouldn’t call anyone a retard?

BTW, that got posted before I was done typing and, as we all know, no delete button.

Perhaps you should stop criticizing others for their terminology and focus on more important things in life.

Wish all you like, but PSU's museum will never have a permanent collection or attract exhibitions that will make it a destination. Enriching student life is a wonderful thing, but what percentage will ever visit? Hard to beleive that PSU doesn't have better uses for the money.

He isn’t very smart (although he thinks he is), and he’s angry. For those two reasons, he has a lot in common with many who support him. Remind you of anyone?

C’mon man. Just admit that you’re solely voting for Maribeth Roman Schmidt because you think she looks like a “Hot Karen”, complete with the cropped do. 😉

I’d link her photo to corroborate my point, but she’s apparently copyright-protected all of her public images. PSU’s BOT needs more gems like her.🙄

ps. I don’t care who wins. PSU as an institution is dying a slow death, principally because of insider greed and BOT candidates desiring to suckle the teets of Old Main and dine at the Final Trough.

So how much of your looming estate is being directed to PSU? You always avoid this question.

My initial guess is 0.0%

I support several worthy causes with my philanthropy confidentially. I enjoy helping people and I am fortunate to be able to afford it. I also donate my time through various volunteer activities on campus. How about you?

I choose to keep those details confidential, and your guess is wrong. But it’s been large enough to receive awards for philanthropy from the university for helping a significant number of students through my funded scholarships.

I have a younger sister with Down syndrome, worked several years with adults with disabilities and work in an elementary school now. In my current role I often have to speak with children (5-11 years old) about their word choice. They usually get it.
In further defense of Barry, I’m guessing his use of the word is an attempt to be funny and shocking but it comes off- to me at least- as just ignorant.

You nitwit, WE HAVE A MUSEUM, and a real nice museum on campus right now. Fully paid for and the building is beautiful. You'd know this if you had ever taken the time to actually visit. We have no need for another museum or a new museum. I'll bet the renovation cost to the existing building to reconfigure it into usable space wasn't even considered in the cost of the new building.

"Barron's Folly" aka the new art museum is his attempt at leaving a legacy on campus. It's not needed and it's a poor use of money. Shame on the BOT for not killing this project

Not so much ignorant as condescending or belittling. I think he knows exactly what he’s saying.

The bar has been set. What will Neeli’s “barren, hold my beer” legacy project be? I can’t wait.

I would hope that Neeli, like barren, laughs at other people’s money.

Yeah, quite possibly. His doubling down on it and attempt to parse semantics leans in that direction. I guess I should have said, “As a possible defense of Barry”…….

But of course. Take on several extra thousand in debt to maybe visit a museum that at most costs a few bucks for all the other adults with money that visit it. It's a life lesson that builds character. Consider yourself blessed to be so lucky and to have such great and caring leadership.
