He performed more impressively in his previous job (which was at a higher level than Kingston's) and he projected a better persona. These things bought him the time to ramp up his program. So his resume' was better and his personal appeal was better.
Thanks. Wasn't paying much attention to Gamecock sports back them. Didn't get re-engaged until 1999 or so.

Also, Shane Beamer impresses me with a fantastic persona. Of course, we all want that to facilitate fantastic results on the gridiron.

Hate to say it but Tennessee is the new up and coming program that has staying power
They were terrible before they hired Vitello. Kingston and Vitello were both hired in June 2017. Look at the different trajectory of the two programs in those 5 years. One is getting it done, the other is not.

The players must want to play for you...from all accounts this coach sucks in this area

I can't remember our BB team looking this short on talent before. I don't see one SEC series we can win.

Not in direct response to your post, but it put me in mind of one I saw above above about how current malcontented people would have wanted to fire Tanner at this stage. Not necessarily so. Tanner had significant success at NC State before we hired him. He enjoyed more inherent good will than this guy from South Florida. Those who try to equate the early days of Tanner here to those of Kingston are off the beam, I think. These two aren't alike except in the sport they coach(ed).

Tanner did a great job for NC State and the only reason he left NC State, the AD didn't want to put up lights for night games... And when Clemson fans complained about Tanner after we hired him, I knew we got a good coach...

Also, general facilities at Doak Field. He apparently bumped into an UnCarolina coach during a game at the restroom...
