3. Shane Beamer & South Carolina are the perfect marriage

Do you know how close the Gamecocks are to being 7-1 and ranked in the top 10?

LSU scored the go-ahead TD in the final minute to squeak out a 3-point win.

Alabama trailed in the 4th quarter before rallying for a 2-point win.

Saturday, LaNorris Sellers looked like the best dual-threat quarterback in the conference, toying with a Texas A&M defense still basking in the praise of hammering LSU a week prior.

Let’s face it: Shane Beamer isn’t goofy, per se, but he’s just quirky enough that most football purists don’t really take him seriously.

But he knocked off another top-10 team Saturday — his 3rd such win over the past 3 years.

That might not sound like much, but I bet James Franklin is impressed.

I get frustrated with Beamer like the rest of the fans with 3 brain cells - *BUT* - I have always told my friends that I really, really want Beamer to be "the guy" SC has waited forever for. He's young, he loves USC, and I don't think he'll go anywhere else, even if offered more $$. Money is not one of Beamers problems and never will be.

We can all say whatever we want as fans about his goofyness at times but no one can say he's scared of the big boys. I absolutely would take Beamer on any team over Franklin.

Franklin won enough at Vandy (averaging eight wins a year) to get hired by Penn State. He's not as likeable as Beamer, but I'll give him his props as a coach. He's 95-40 at PSU with nine bowl-eligible seasons, not counting the truncated Covid season. His winning percentage there is 70.9%. If I knew right now he could do the same thing in Columbia, I'd throw Beamer over the rail in an instant to get him.

What Beamer did in the portal needs to be commended. Kennard, along with Stewart, has completely changed our D. Demetrius Knight doesn’t get enough love either. Double digit tackles the last 2 games.
It sucks to envision what this team could be with Juice but honestly better off without that nonsense in the locker room.

The Ol’Miss game unacceptable. Alabama, LSU… we should have won one or both off those. They were close enough to not be to upset about.

We just need to win out against Vandy, Missouri, Wofford and Clemson. Then I’ll officially be like, yea, he should stay around.

I'm new to these boards, have fans here put beamer on the hot seat? Thats outrageous
It wasn't so much putting him on the hot seat as it was enough grumbling to open the closet door and show him that the seat was being prepared to be warmed pretty quickly if things didn't turn around.

Things have appeared to have turned around. Still more games to play this season. Can't let up.

Yeah agree to disagree on that one. A 95-40 record gets you fired at Penn State. Honestly with Franklin here you probably still are only looking at 7-5 and 8-4 seasons at best with the strength of the league now. PS the knife he put in the back of Fridge at Maryland before taking the Vandy job is duly noted.

I thought winning the ones you should isn't ''good enough'' and winning against top ranked opponents isn't Franklin's forte, so I don't see that as an upgrade.

I'd remind you that almost every conference game he won at Vandy involved beating somebody who was supposed to be better than they were. It was a given.

I'll be interested to see how long he stays unemployed if he and Penn State part company and what kind of interest he attracts.

True, but hasn't carried over to the ''big time'' games at PS which will be his downfall.
There was no pressure at Vandy - PS is a different animal.

But the Gamecocks aren't 7-1 and in the top ten. They're 5-3 and unranked. So I would say pump the breaks on Beamer worship for a little bit. That said, his job appears safe for next year and I'm behind keeping him for another 3-5 to see how that goes if Carolina goes 8-4 or 9-3.

What would college football be without fan overreaction?

His job was safe for next year anyway, imo. The new AD hiring in wouldn't make a move, the tining isn't there.

But getting to a bowl has solidified his position for next year, when we have to totally rebuild the defense.

He isn’t on the hot seat. People on the internet complain after a loss then it has faded pretty regularly as far as Beamer.
He was on the express train to the hot seat when it looked like a 5 win season. He is pretty safe now for a couple years. Enough fans will hang on to this A&M win to buy him at least two more years of relative safety. If he gets to 8 wins this season don't be surprised to see a raise and extension.

Shane has more top 10 wins at South Carolina than Franklin has at Penn state.
Pretty much says it all.
It actually doesn't. For example, the A&M team we just beat was apparently overrated. If they FINISH THE YEAR in the Top 10, they will matter. If you want to cite any of Shane's other wins over Top 10 teams, we'll look at those also, taking into account their AP rankings when those seasons ended.

Now, if Shane can get to a 70-plus winning percentage that is compiled while playing a nine-game conference schedule every year, I'll be around for you and others to upbraid.

Please no raise and extension. Don't listen to his agent tell stories.

From my memory, UT finished in the top the year we beat them. Clemson dropped and ended up 20? A&M is yet to be seen. They play Auburn and Texas to end the year.

I'll credit any who finished in the Top 10. We'll discuss the disgraceful defeats also if anyone wants to.

That's not how top ten wins are categorized though. When discussing James Franklin's resume against top ten teams and Shane Beamer's resume against top ten teams, it's a fact that Beamer is 3-4 and Franklin is 3-18. It's irrelevant to that specific stat where the opponent finished.

Of course that's just one small stat and shouldn't be the only thing a coach is judged on. Obviously Franklin's overall body of work is much more impressive than Beamer's.

That may be, but that means that stat is garbage.

For example, GT claims a "Top 10" win over FSU this year. But FSU is 1-7 or 1-8 now?

Right, it's not a great stat as far as that goes, especially for games early in the season.

It is a good metric for analyzing how a team plays in perceived big matchups, even if the competition quality proves to not be top ten as the season goes on. That's why it's such a damning stat for Franklin...his teams almost never win those games.

Yeah, it's a stat that gets better for later games in the year.

Jmho, but I've always liked using the rankings of teams pre bowls.

If we had played them 10 times during Beamer's tenure, what's your thinking?

Seeing that Carolina has rarely been ranked under Beamer, the odds are pretty good that Penn State would take most of those matchups.
You also have to take into account the fact that Franklin coaches a far bigger traditional power than Beamer does.
In Other words if he can't do it at PS I don't want him here!

Penn State sustained the worst broadside in the history of college athletics that wasn't the Death Penalty. In terms of perception, it was far, far worse than SMU or anyone else. But in real terms, they were docked 40 scholarships over four years and a four-year bowl ban, and when Franklin took over, they were only one non-interim head coach removed from that debacle.

Bill O'Brien had stayed for two seasons (15-9) before bolting to the pros. It was Franklin who bore half the duration of the sanctions and ALL of the long-term impact.

So I'm not going to say that going over 70 % on wins vs. losses is not getting it done, whatever anyone else says. He proved he was an upper echelon coach before he ever went up there.

It's pretty insane that a guy with his record doesn't have job security. Penn State better be careful what they wish for...the grass is definitely not always greener.

Four 11 win seasons, another 10 win season, and 5 New Years Six bowls. That's a good run almost any other school would take.

He probably stays in the Big 10 and would replace Locksley at Maryland If Penn State and Franklin parts ways. Less pressure and a lot of ties.

Penn State gonna win 8 to 10 games every year with me coaching. It is what it is. Way easier job.
