Beamer's not going to MSU, but if he did...

For all sorts of reasons, Beamer will not be the next head coach at MSU, not least of which is a mutual lack of interest. However, I had a friend text and jokingly ask who I would want to replace Beamer. Even though I know he's NOT leaving, the text did send me down a rabbit trail of thought.

So, I ask you. If Beamer left, who would be your top pick?

At that point I would want to just give Jamey Chadwell a shot.
I vacillate on this. Is the goal to win 9-10 games or win the SEC? If history is any indication, running that style of offense won't get you a SEC ring. But the guy has done well everywhere, and it would be exciting to watch at least most of the time.

I would not want Jamey Chadwell. He nor anyone on his staff has worked on a power 5 team. I think that is a big disadvantage in recruiting and coaching overall. Someone has to give him a chance, but I don't want to be the first one.

To be fair we haven't ever won a SEC title, so I think we need to get back to 9-10 wins a year first. Granted the ring is always the goal.

Agreed.

It's all about steps, imo.

The first step is qualifying for a bowl every year.

Then getting to the 9-10 win plateau.

Then you could be recruiting at a level to challenge in a special/lucky year.

But we start by competing and beating teams lile Missouri and UK yearly.

You don't have to look any further than Jon Sumrall of Troy.... a clone of Kirby Smart and only 41.

Some P5 school will roll the dice on him in the next year or 2.
The jury is still out on Beamer. He is getting mileage right now on the Clemson and Tennessee wins last year and the UNC game the year before. But some forget we were lucky to beat East Carolina and Vandy in Year One. And the Jax State score does not indicate how fortunate we were the other week . If Beamer does not pan out in the next year or two, we might be that P5 school.

Urban Meyer or Jamey Chadwell.

I say let's cross the 9-10 wins a year bridge first, and then decision about the next level.

I like Chadwell too. I don't understand why the hiring authorities @ USC did not hire him when they had a chance. Other than that, he'd be my obvious choice before Sumrall.
It is not only South Carolina. Louisville, Purdue, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and Duke has passed on Chadwell the last few seasons..

Almost half the schools in the SEC have passed on Chadwell.

I certainly understand that. BUT, he is a WINNER. Schools, including South Carolina, passed on Hugh Freeze, too. Auburn did not. In fact looking at the Auburn board, I get the sense they are happy to have him with one asking, "Is Freeze to Texas A&M a risk we are underestimating?". I suspect that just like Freeze, Chadwell will be leaving Liberty in the next couple of years for a P5 Head Coaching job.

Yes, they did., just like they did Hugh Freeze. But, like Freeze, I suspect he will leave Liberty in the next couple of years for a P5 job. Chadwell has won big EVERYWHERE he has been. But that train has left us. Maybe Sumrall IF Beamer does not work out.

I am sure he will get a chance. If Tony Elliott has another terrible record next season with the Cavaliers, Chadwell could be the coach at Virginia. Freeze was a different story.

Of course. There's always a different reason for passing on one coach from another. But both Freeze and Chadwell definitely have one thing in common: They win. I suspect some P5 school somewhere will hire Chadwell in the next couple of years. And like everywhere he has been, he will win big. Hopefully, Beamer will work out for us.

A couple of other potential hires if Beamer does not work out are the 2 Daves north of us: Dave Doeren of NC State and Dave Clawson of Wake Forest. While neither would be splashy hires, they would be solid hires.

I’m still hoping Beamer will work out. But I doubt another SEC school is going to snatch him up with the his current record.

Damaged goods and inviting volatility isn't the same as hoping the spread-option hasn't passed by the P5 on the whole, and would never have worked against SEC fronts.

Agree. I think Freeze is dramatically overrated. And for one reason or another, he will be gone in 4 years.

I’m not sure Chadwell’s offense would translate against defenses with elite speed and athleticism.

I feel fairly certain that Clawson would be at another school within 2 years.

Was never sold on Freeze. He was cheating his butt off at Ole Miss and went 39-25 (19-21). His legend is almost entirely built on beating Saban in back-to-back seasons. If you take those wins away, or even one of them, he's probably not even on anyone's radar. It's more a testament to how great Saban is than how good Freeze is.

But I come back to the fact that he had to cheat like mad to go 19-21 in conference.
