On the agenda: Phase 1 Approval of Williams-Brice Stadium Development Project

This apparently does not seem to relate to the retail/dining development project but to WB specifically.

Would the BOT even be involved with the retail/dining development project? It would not be USC money being spent on those.

Sounds like it's for building more premium suites.

Does adding premium suites take away seats for regular folks?

Was hoping it'd be something more meaningful.

How about we turn the Floyd football building into a hotel ?
Turn that end into a great premium seating section with an inside concession concourse accessible from both main sides of the stadium. Holding that end-zone hostage to the Floyd Building is outrageous. Just do something great down there and name it for them, I don't care.

You can count on it. But don't worry, Tanner said capacity will not drop below 70,000.

This is certainly one of those "don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining" kind of things.

How about upping it to 90,000?

It means more money. Get in step. You have to enlarge the footprint to add seats if you take seats away for suites. We ain't enlarging the footprint.

I hate to break it to you but more money helps the more winning side of the argument. Having said that that, I’m totally against anything that lowers the seating capacity of Willy B . The new release on this phase seemed to be talking more about upgrading areas around the stadium. Going forward, sure , do something great with the single deck end zone, but not at the expense of seating capacity.

Reduced seating capacity is a done deal.

Almost every game there are a few thousand empty seats across East Upper and South Upper. Has been this way for a decade. Declining attendance is a well documented macro trend too. Exchanging higher value for a small reduction in what is essentially vanity capacity is the right move IMO

Most of those seats are bought up by people looking to resale them at a HUGE profit. All the ticket sites are full of these seats. They would never be empty if they sold them to real fans at a decent price.

Maybe so. But they're empty. They're clearly not being bought by people who want to go to the games. The face value of an SC ticket is a decent price and East Upper and South Upper generally aren't part of the season ticket distribution, and we rarely sell out more than a week in advance. So regular fans can buy those tickets direct from the university easily as long as they don't wait till the last minute.

There's precious few stadiums that are truly full on a consistent basis anymore,. And that's primarily because virtually every B10 & SEC game is available on TV. 20 years ago that wasn't the case.

Buying seats for resale that mostly don't get resold seems like a stupid business model to me.

I read that the current seating capacity is less than 78,000 due to modifications in 2020. This round will reduce seating further. We're gonna have us a typical ACC stadium if we keep "improving"

We rarely pack the 77k we have.

Regardless, to some degree, absolute capacity is vanity. What we want is maximized potential. The intersection of capacity, luxury, wow factor, unique factor, tradition, etc.

And we just don't have the ecosystem or macros to move up towards 90 instead of down towards 70. Edit: I wish we did.

If you go 5-7 every year, you won't need 77k seats. When you reduce capacity, it's a sure sign the program is in decline.

I haven’t followed this closely, but where did we lose seating in the 2020 renovations? I’m not doubting it, just can’t identify where when I go to games.

I believe I read where the luge seating at the Gamecock entrance tunnel and seats that were added to the East Side club level combined to reduce seating to the current 77,000 level.

The lack of vision is acknowledged by this "good" athletic director.

Well, this is my 13th fall as an athletics director, so quite honestly, I kick myself a little bit that I haven’t been in that room next door, the board room, 10 years ago to say, hey, this is needed and it’s needed now. So I kick myself a little bit, and then you go back in time, 25 or 30 years ago, people were putting in suites, and we didn’t do it. So that’s a key piece of revenue that we haven’t been able to enjoy over the years. And also, premium opportunities for our fan base, and it’s all come together. Vanderbilt’s in the process right now of adding suites. So we need to be in the game as quick as possible.
