Penn State football under Franklin is soft - especially mentally.
I don’t know who you are but you’re a big tough guy sitting behind your keyboard calling out these guys. STFU. Have you sat through practice? Have you watched winter workouts? Have you sat in team meeting? Have you sat in position meetings? Do you know these guys? Have you broke bread with these guys? Do you know their backgrounds?

I have in every case. I played this game and I coached this game. These guys aren’t soft. I’m any manner. To attack these guys show what a chicken sh*t you are. Adversity reveals character. Thanks for showing yours.

are there issues with this team, yes. I sat in that stadium yesterday and what I saw was messy coaching on offense. You cant ask much more of the defense. You think they are soft? Mike’s play calling and missed opportunities on his route packages and concepts that failed to create sep and space. He went away from the running game too fast. The 4 “cute” plays weren’t needed and were poorly timed when he did call them. It seemed there was too much focus on breaking our own tendencies than doing what we do well, like short yardage.

I’ll stop there but my message to you is STFU being critical of these guys toughness and work ethic. You have NO idea.

This and all losses aren’t on the players. The D played their guts out. The O just couldn’t get it done. And much less to do with execution than preparation and game plan. How does Hardy let
a punt fall without a FC? Same reason Ford doesn’t know to take a knee against Indiana. Coaches get too cute with quippy arguments with reporters and on the field with dumb plays at times when we have momentum. Kids always play hard but the football IQ is lacking from the HC and that shows in performance.

do you know for sure the boneheaded plays are on MY? Was MY making these same boneheaded calls before he ever set foot at Penn State?

I'd sincerely appreciate your take on why Penn State almost always loses to Ohio St and Michigan

Not doubt there are multiple reasons. The two that stand out to me are game day decision making and the quality of OL/DL

It's hard for me to envision Franklin ever becoming an elite coach given that he hasn't done it so far. He's good, not great

This team is soft. Physically and mentally. The responsibility lies with the head coach.

I actually know quite a bit about it on a personal level - every bit as much as you.

It is not a personal attack on the players or even Franklin. It is what it is and our opponents are also well aware of this as well.

And I don’t stoop to foul language and personal attacks to make my points. Doing so, says a lot about you.

Its pretty bad when a D lineman is celebrating a tackle he made but the running back gained 4 yards on the play. That is the culture of a James Franklin team.

Did that D look soft to you? What's soft is our fanbase.
Did that D look soft to you? What's soft is our fanbase.
You mean the fanbase that consistently almost sells out 100,00+Beaver Stadium year after year, and stays in that stadium throughout the games despite at times horrible weather conditions? Or that same fanbase that has grown use to Penn State losing big game after big game, and then having to listen to the media reminding them of it constantly? Sorry that some of us may have grown a little tired of the medocrity that seems acceptable to some.

Hardly…our fan base is incredibly supportive…rain or shine…home or away.

Did we win? Defense was mentally soft…did not make enough plays to win. Ran mouths (King) and came up short.

Imo, the bottom line is we are once again an afterthought to the big 2, to the SEC and our new pac 10 big boys. Who fears us?
I fear 9-2 will be 8-3+ next year with our western friends joining the fray. But GO STATE BEAT INDIANA 1-0:p
after yesterday, does the rest of the season really matter? Not really.

We have very talented players. Do we have enough talent on this squad to be a playoff team? I still believe we are a few players short. What certainly stood out yesterday was that don't have a player the caliber of Harrison. Do Georgia and Bama have one or two of those type of players? I would have say yes. So the question begs. Can Franklin lure one or two of those recruits to Penn State. I'm not sure. We need to win some big games which will reap rewards in the recruiting wars.

Then please do yourself a favor and take the rest of the year off. If an entire season is over after one loss then most of the teams in college football are done as well.

I like undisciplined more than soft because soft has a real negative connotation that I don't think is fair. But the Hardy punt return to me was a perfect example of lack of discipline. He HAS to field that punt in that situation. He HAS to. That had to have been drilled into him. If it wasn't, shame on the coaches. If it was and he still let it hit, shame on him. He wouldn't return another punt for me. I don't care if you return 2 punts for TD against UMASS, letting that punt hit the ground was unforgivable. Whoever's fault it was. (Please understand my use of "unforgivable" is hyperbole on a football message board.)

You hit on some points that interest me. I'm being sincere when I ask these questions. I agree with the too muck emphasis on the "breaking of tendencies" comment. Does this offensive scheme limit the ability for a team to have an identity? Does the scheme allow for the ability to run the "same" play out of different formations?

I ask these questions because, to the untrained eye (mine), it seems as though it takes a long time for PSU to get back to things that worked earlier. For example, Singleton runs for 38 yards on back-to-back to plays. Instead of sticking with it and saying "stop us," PSU went to the air. Another example, many bemoan the lack of a deep passing attack. I bemoan the lack of an intermediate passing attack and I'll never understand throwing a 5-yard pass from the far hash mark to the near sideline.

Mental toughness is needed. They play afraid in big games. So no, I disagree, they are soft.

And the excuse making from the fans is incredible. Jay has done more with less than that offensive performance today.
None of the highly rated players on offense would have committed to PSU with Jay. He was recruiting on a 3 star max level. He had no choice but to try to do more with less. “More” wanted nothing to do with him and rightly so. If you remember, Jay was the recruiting coordinator that lead to the 2000-2004 debacle. Nepotism at its finest.

can we start a separate Paterno thread, sticky it, and make a rule all joe/jay talk is done there as to not clutter up real talk? Cool.
as for nepo, my best job interview/best job I ever had was in an office with a 3’ lion shrine statue on the boss’ desk. Our professional network is FLUSH with alums helping alums.

Tom said you don’t get to make board rules….

😁
If you look closely I said “unofficial” this time and surely you agree that that thread after that game had the makings of Tom board legend. Boss let his ego get the best of him cause I dipped my toes with “official”. It can be argued if I said “unofficial” he would have allowed it. Says lots if you pay attention

I think any new board rules - unofficial or otherwise - are very unlikely. But, the ‘sides’ as it were are pretty well known. Just assume it with certain folks….

But which one? #tamponmachinesinboysbathrooms

Hey - maybe you can enact some legislation against that? When you get around to electing a speaker without being held hostage by a guy who pays for underage sex with girls via Venmo….
