I get your point here but disagree. I think most people wind up with a circle of friends regardless of where they live- small town or NYC, makes little difference. Big school, small school -the same.
ooops, I meant personal connections with professors/researchers

Citibank not making cuts is news. Slashing jobs is part of the corporate culture.
I guess. My point was that PSU is not the only place making cuts. The article states that 38% of 900 business leaders interviewed said layoffs are likely this year at their companies. Lots of big named employers on this list, not just Citi.

Apples to apples - UConn and UNH are making cuts too. I'm sure there are, at least should be, more to come.

Thanks and this shows that it is pervasive and almost certainly part of a bigger trend. Apples to apples and even the orange and peach crops that I had posted are all suffering losses. There's probably common reasons.

What is the reason?

That's up for debate. There clearly is a propensity for slashing budgets and jobs right now in academia and in the corporate world. It's almost certainly not as simplistic as only one reason (thank you, I modified my post to reflect this). What do you think is causing it?

Corporate world? Stock price, over-investment in staff during COVID. Higher education? Too saturated, declining applications, less interest, bloat? I don’t know.

If PSU calls an expenditure an investment, then an inquiring mind has the right to ask for the ROI. Related to this, when will PSU break even on the Eric Barren Grand Cathedral of The Arts (and such) and begin to show a profit on it? 🤔
The ROI is that Penn State becomes better, doncha' know? How is "better" measured?📏📏📏

No one "invests" in salaries. Obviously.

You invest in Missions or Goals - which sometimes involve adding staff (salaries), and sometimes involve reducing staff (salaries) as a result.

A lot of PR jibberish.

They haven’t made a cut, yet.

Have to disagree with you on this on Barry. On times you do invest in salaries. Especially, when you are attempting to retain your staff. While Penn State is lucky not to be in a competitive market for staff in State College, so of the positions within the university are in demand at other universities. Additionally, there are some positions within the university that are very under market for salaries.

I'm not in anyway claiming that is what the entire $60MM was used for but I'm am saying there are investments in salaries in business.

Actually, I don't think we disagree, but more just a semantics thing.

I would, if such a situation were present, consider it (assuming it was some critical position, where that person was integral to achieving some university mission) as an investment in that mission - with the salary being the cart behind the mission horse.
But I think we are saying the exact same thing, with different semantics.

We would also agree, I think, that any reference to $60 million: much (most) of that is largely not "investment" at all.

Being a former Commonwealth Campus attendee (OZ), I will beg to differ. When I went up to UP I was NOT as overwhelmed as I might well have been. That's because I was able to make friends at OZ and had a core when I went up to UP for things like IMs and hanging out. Made new friends of course. But it helped to have that core, especially when you are a bit introverted, as I am. I mean UP is so big that I had HS friends (who went straight there) that I never ran into there.

Edit: And add to that the comments about getting to know some profs better.

If you're looking to cut money, asking Eric Barron for his 'consulting' fees back would be a good place to start. If it was me, I'd take a hatchet to some of these bloated administrative groups (I'm looking at you guys in the student affairs DEI group, as an example). The bloat's been going on way too long and has sadly only gotten worse over the years (although not surprising). Here in North Carolina, one of our local universities has some educational programs on the chopping block and that's a valid path to take as well.

My experience was different. I started as a freshman at UP. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed for about half a day, by the first evening I wandered over from East Halls (Beaver was my first home) to the lawn at Old Main where there was an outdoor rock band playing. I met a few people that evening and a few more the next day- and I knew I was home.

I also started at University Park as a freshman. My dorm was in East Halls. On move-in day, I wandered over to a basketball court and asked if I could join a game. When one of the students told me to go f*ck myself, I knew I was home.

First sentence, first paragraph of "Job Description and Position Requirements," are we seeing the beginnings of a personality cult? I have never seen a similar reference in any professional organization. And this isn't the first time I've seen the same or a similar reference in a PSU document.

No, I myself have never seen anything like that before.
