I wonder if it’s more in response to receiver recruiting, both from the high school level and the portal or receiver development. Could be a little of both.
I totally agree. There has to be a back story to this.

The hiring of Stubblefield, back in 2020, was very "curious".

When hired by PSU, Stubblefield had a long history of mostly "one and done" stops, at less-than-elite programs, with no promotions, and productivity out of the various WR groups at each stop not showing improvement.
Obviously, given the long history of one-and-dones, there was no track record vav recruiting either (and, if one recalls, his recruiting bit at PSU got off to a very rocky start - and didn't appear to ever gain any momentum).
With all the money PSU is spending on staffing, I was a bit surprised when he was hired - but certainly not surprised now.

I did not see that coming.
Really sorry to see him go. Don’t have stats but it seems like the number of WR drops declined as soon as he started here and stayed low. Can’t see that his unit let us down like the O-line. I think the WR’s did a good job under him. His tweet reads like someone who is not moving to a better opportunity so I guess he was asked to go.

Yeah, he definitely sounds pissed off. My line of thinking is that JF has not been happy with the development of some of the young receivers, and that may be in talking to some of the portal receivers that Stubblefield isn’t the guy to get the top receivers to come here.

Agree. The number of drops improved drastically when he came to PSU.

I don't understand? I thought the receivers improved under his tutelage. Might be a recruiting issue as PSU was not able to draw in top tier HS wide receivers.
Or it could be as simple as the guy was late every day for the staff meeting. It could be he was hung over every morning. Probably had nothing to do w on the field stuff

They did. They ran really crisp routes.

This departure is a head scratcher but Fraudklin always need a sacrificial asst coach to either (a) atone for underperformance or (b) provide hype for becoming “elite”

He also (c) likes to surround himself with sycophants. 👍

He was a step up from what we had previously. Still I am not sure the development was there as well as you wonder if the WRs shying away in the portal were a reflection on confidence in him. He was good but I thought PSU could do better... Be interesting to see how long a replacement takes. I get the feeling JF has someone lined up already. Similar to oline coaching switch and OC when he sees an opportunity to get better he takes it. He is no longer staying put, produce or you are out. He realizes to compete with OSU he needs top coaching

While a surprise to us. I would imagine Stubblefield gave CJF at least some notice this could happen, if indeed Stubblefield’s decision to leave.

Or it could just be a case of a decided upgrade that James has coveted for some time, became available.

Just grasping at straws. I know nothing regarding the availability of WR coaches.
I kindof typed that before I thought it through. There are plenty of family connections in college football without any issues.

Bullpucky.

Which routes, if any, did any PSU WR’s mis-run in the Rose Bowl?

If anything, Clifford’s success was due to excellent WR play.
