Could Byrne's honeymoon be over?

This is all rumor but just some things I am hearing...

I have heard that Byrne is wanting to oust Cristil. It'll probably happen next year. Our soon to be announced new radio partnership will be the end of Jack. The new people want an ex-player color guy and new play-by-play announcer. Jim might have the inside track for play-by-play, but don't count out Bart Gregory.

If this happens, Byrne to me would be on the **** list. I understand wanting your own people but to me, Jack Cristil is the face of Mississippi State sports. What say ye?

when you can't even use his calls for your commercials, it's time. That said, it should be on his terms. I would just hope he realizes it's time.

that being said, his skills have definitely dwindled, and, just like Polk, he'll stay until he physically can't do it any longer.

...he is untouchable and GB knows that. And....I dont think \GB's first month in office has been anything NEAR a honeymoon. Quite the opposite.

...the new radio partnership may spell the end for Jim doing baseball as well. ....unless Jim resigns from his current employer and takes a new job.

is the big gripe I have with him. I thought I would go crazy from him calling Jason Husband "Jason Hubbard".

and will use soft outlets like message boards to float these kinds of trial balloons. If there is a mountainous backlash, he can deny the move as a dastardly rumor [cooked up by LT backers to discredit him]. If the backlash is less strident, he can proceed with caution toward implementation.

At some point, Veasey will run with it and give it legs. Ellis will eventually catch on that something is afoot and start asking questions.

At the end of the day, it's time for Jack to shut it down. May as well be now as anytime.

it has been a honeymoon. He has had a tough job and let me restate, even if he did get rid of Jack, I still like everything else he is doing.

He'll announce sometime upcoming that this will be his last season. Count on it.
And I agree with the Bart G. being in the mix.

I don't think he should be kicked to the curb. He should be given a role in the play-by-play the way the Cubs did Harry Cary. Harry would not do the entire game, just a few innings - samething should be worked out with Jack.

That said, Jack needs to decide when he retires. He doesn't need to be forced out because really, it doesn't make all that much difference who the radio announcer is. If Byrne forces him out, I think he's making a bad decision and pissing off a lot of people unnecessarily. It really won't be that big of a deal to me (Jack is so bad I can't listen to him any more anyway and I'll actually listen more if Jack is gone).

might draw the line at Jack. We all grew up listening to him. It's tough to lose that connection with your past. If Jack steps down of his own accord, that would be tough to take. If he's asked to step down, that would be impossible to take.

piss me off highly. Jim's got 10 good years left if he wants them. And, damnit, he DESERVES to call games played by worthy players and coached by legitimate coaches.

I hear that Watson does not like Byrne; that among the candidates, Byrne was at the bottom of Watson's preferences. Once Doc decided he wanted out, the College Board told him that he needed to finish the AD hire and Byrne was the easiest choice.

80% Jack is better than most others 100%.

It's like Munson, Ward, and Kieth Jackson. It's unique. Most are cookie cutter announcers now. There won't be guys like them anymore.

...I'm with you DS. If this is true, and I hope it's not, Byrne just may have crossed the line. Jack deserves to be there as long as he wants to be, barring any kind of Alzheimer's type situation. He still does an adequate job, and he has suffered through more bad football and bad basketball than any other MSU fan alive. Any type of radio deal that gets rid of Jack (or Jim for that matter) needs to be a deal that we don't take, regardless of the upside.

Let's all face the fact that we didn't want Raffo and Bryne delivered. We need a new voice for radio. If you don't believe me, then go to the main page of the six pack and listen to the call for Timmy's play against Bama to win the SEC outright. That was huge and Jack was as boring as hell. Look at it this way as well, maybe he's our albatross?
We've never won the damn SEC in football with him calling games. Just a thought. GB-keep shakin' it up.

Damn, Watson was the guy who declared that the baseball coaching search would be handled exclusively by a committee of ONE: Greg Byrne. How anyone could suggest that Watson has something against Byrne is beyond me.

First of all, it's the radio announcer. His calls have no direct correlation to MSU success.

And I think Jack's call of that play was perfectly fine. Now some calls this year lacked some luster but if there was anyone that has earned the right to call his own shot at MSU, it's Jack Cristil.

you are dead wrong in your "attitude" of how to go about the change. Jack needs to be given 1,000 chances to shut it down on his own terms. There are ways to do that correctly; ways that do not piss off 98% of the fan base.

unless Jim resigns from his current employer and takes a new job.
Jim works for the university and he's about to retire from those day to day responsibilities anyway (at least soon anyway). He has a small heart condition and he knows it's time to take it easy. He has plans to continue announcing though.

As for firing Jack...now you're going to sacred ground Greg. Be very careful, I don't care if he is crazy and drunk, I'd still listen.

But Byrne doesn't need to piss off a lot of people by forcing him out. And on a morbid note, if Byrne does want Jack gone by the start of the 2009 season, he may not have to do anything anyway. Jack himself jokes that he doesn't even buy green bananas any more.

Why cant you guys just let Greg do his job without a big new rumor of the day every other minute?
You know that he is not going to force Jack out unless Jack is physically incapable of performing, in which case I know that Jack will voluntarilly stop broadcasting. I do not believe that a new company handling the broadcasts would make any stipulation regarding this since they are bound to know how popular Jack is to us all. Jack does make more mistakes now, but just listen to the ESPN announcers and you will see he still outperforms most of them.

Greg needs to have a chance at least for a year to do his job without micromanagement from every fan every other second , although it seems to be a great fun thing for many to do.

and like your post, it's an opinion. And to answer your post, this board was built on the belief if is a rumor you can post it. But if you are wrong, you will be called out on it. So if you don't like that view, just don't read.

someone said 80% Cristil is better than 100% anyone else. I can't agree with that. Other than Kellum, I'd take every other voice in the conference over Jack right now. I quit listening significantly to games 3-4 years ago...its just painful. I think he should probably go out on his own terms. I grew up with him and love that voice. It won't kill anyone to let him hang around like it killed the baseball program with Polk. But he needs to retire--the big calls from this year are awful. He adds no excitement or build up to the game. Its like he's sleep walking.

Id be unhappy if Ellis isn't calling baseball. At least he serves a purpose and is really good at it.

they are the only two people on campus who deserve that golden ticket. i do, however, feel that jack needs to consider stepping down on his own terms. there is also a good chance the next guy could suck, so i don't feel real strongly about it either way. the only reason we're even considering it is becuase we remember how good jack used to be. we won't find another jack. ever.

what i do feel strongly about is jim doing baseball. when bart fills in, he does a good job, but jim is the lone common thread in my entire memory of msu baseball. good timessss.

there are so many other things that need to be addressed first.

on a regular basis 30 years ago, you would know its time for him to go.
He is not 25% the announce he used to be.

Doesn't he want to break the record for longest tenure as a school's voice? He said he was two years away to beating out the guy from Minnesota. I could deal with two years. I think he deserves it.
